Give a Gift that Actually Matters

During this time of year, many people get wrapped up in the Holiday Shuffle of buying, wrapping and giving gifts, to in return, receive, unwrap and give thanks for gifts. Half of the things we receive, we either don’t need, don’t want or dislike, so things are tossed in closets or covered up in a drawer until it is re-discovered and either trashed or given away later down the line. Rather than continuing this wasteful tradition, give a gift that matters to someone that truly needs it.

The Christmas Holiday is not a happy time for everyone. But it doesn’t have to be this way. If every family donated $1/$5/$10 or more, that little amount of money is truly a gift that keeps on giving, not just for one but for hundreds of people that have been affected by that cause.

I am not rich. I have a mortgage, car payment, children and everything else that most people who have reached adulthood are responsible for. I can not afford to donate $100 to every cause that I believe in, nor do I have the time available to feed the homeless or volunteer at the veteran’s hospital. But every year, I try to make a difference by giving what I can for people that I do not know. Why? Because one day, I may be one of those nameless/faceless people that prays for a miracle to beat the odds.

There are thousands of charities and organizations that deserve support. I composed this list of the ones that I am familiar with or have a personal connection to. If you want to help someone who you will probably never meet, so they can have a chance for a better life or at any life at all-perhaps one of these causes would be of interest to you.

If you are not able to donate, I understand, the economy has been in turmoil and for many, $5 is unimaginably difficult to let go. But perhaps you may know someone that can help, or wants to help if they knew where to donate, if you could please forward this message or most a link to the information, you can help by helping spread the word.

You will not have a year filled with bad luck if you don’t forward this. You won’t be granted a wish in the next 2 hours if you do. In fact, your life probably will not change either way-but if it was you who needed help, wouldn’t you hope that you would not end up in the recycle bin.

Here are just a few causes or a do good just to do it links. Some help a group-some an individual-some a cause. Some take your time-some will accept your donations-others just want you to know that they are here.

A Million Dollars for Cancer- My friend, Ben (a fellow Huber), began this. Although he doesn’t profit from it, he is creating 1million custom (one of a kind) drawings for every donation received. All you have to do to be apart of this is send him a $1 for the donation and a self addressed/postage paid envelope for him to send you back your drawing. Here is the link to his page, which tells you a little more about what he is fighting for.

Fight Child Neglect and Abuse- Educate parents on how to be parents. Keep children safe from danger. Help all levels of the abusive situation, overcome and preserver. Family is important, but not all parents are prepared for parenthood. You have to attend school or training to become a nurse, a hairdresser or to work at a daycare. But any person can become a parent. If parents were taught how to handle situations, how to discipline and how to teach their children, perhaps child abuse would not accure as often as it does.

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation- Hugh Farr, who I personally know, is the director of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation/Lone Star Chapter. They participate in community events, as well as host them here in San Antonio Texas and surrounding areas. Time/Money/Stories/Suggestions; he is open to whatever it is that you want to give or share. Any little bit helps.

Educate the Youth- they are the future of this country. When we are young, the decision that they will make will determine how we live and survive. We need to make sure that they have what they need to learn what they must learn to succeed in life. It does not matter if you have children or not, the children of today are going to affect your life at some time or another. It is up to us to determine whether or not they get the tool to become doctors and teachers or drug dealers and gang bangers. Protect them, Love them, educate them…

I hope that you feel inspired to try to make a difference somewhere at sometime. If you don’t, I still hope you have a very Happy Holiday Season, Surrounded By all the People that you Love.

This was absolutely wonderful H.C. Porter. I think if we all sacrificed something - no matter how little - the impact would be immensely felt to those who needed it the most. Thanks for showing us that there are still orginizations that are truly concerned about their fellow-men.

Thanks H.C. for pointing out some great new charities and for lending some recognition to my project to raise a million for cancer research. My daughter and I have made it our goal to set up a Facebook page before the new year!
