Frugal Handmade Gift Ideas: Gifts In a Jar

Need ideas for the perfect yet inexpensive, homemade gift? How about a gift in a jar! A gift in a jar is a jar containing all the ingredients for a type of food for quick and easy preparation by the recipient. Whether you are the creative type or not, anyone can make these gifts in a jar and anyone would love to receive such a thoughtful handmade gift. There are many types of foods you can put in the jars from cookie mixes to soup mixes and even prepared foods too such as jams and salsa. Small jars are used as well as large jars and decorating the jar is so much fun.... as I always say, the possibilities are endless! You can buy new jars in bulk or just use jars you've saved. Once you've got your jars rounded up, get busy filling them up with goodies! I've rounded up what I thought were some of the best free resources online. I hope this will help inspire you as these would be great for any gift giving occasion!

tlpoague- I agree.. I think handmade gifts are not only better on the pocketbook but they really show the recipient they are special because of the time and effort put into it. I bet your crocheted gifts will be very well received :) Now I am wondering what you are making... I sure wish I could learn how to crochet... my grandmother has made some of the most beautiful blankets. I know how to crochet a single chain but that's it.... I guess it's just a matter of weaving that stitch when doing the next row. You have me curious.. I have to look up crocheting now! Thanks so much for dropping back by..and so glad you found this useful :)

I look forward to reading that one, too! I would rather go homemade, then spend a fortune on a gift. It just means more to me. Right now I am crocheting gifts as I get time.

Thank you so much for dropping by :)

RTalloni, I used to write hub ideas that came to mind on random sheets of paper and of course, when I needed an idea, none of random sheets of paper could be found! I finally opened notepad on both my laptop and desktop and started a Hub ideas list so now when an idea comes to mind I type it and save it and I know right where to go to look for ideas :) Hope you have a great week as well!

Love this hub. What great ideas. I knew a few of them and have done some but not all that you have listed. Voted Up.

Wouldn't be nice to have the time to write about all the neat ideas that come to mind? I reserve a few for myself in hopes of writing about them sometime, but your gifts in a jar hub is tops and the special diet idea is one that a lot of people might benefit from. Have wonderful week!

Jamie Brock profile image

Jamie Brock 4 years ago from Texas Author

Hi RTalloni- The cowgirl cookies are one of my favorites too. These would be great to make someone with dietary restrictions. As much as they have available in the food stores today, I'm sure it would be easy to put together some special ones like glutten free, low fat or really anything like that. You always bring the best ideas when you comment! Thank you for dropping in. Great to 'see' you :)

What a great collection you've put together! Designing one of these for a person with serious dietary needs would be a great way to let them know that you are thinking of them. There is no way I can pick a favorite out of your collection in this post--well, okay, I think the cowgirl cookies are really extra special. :)

In a time when we are all trying to save money, these gift jars are a great idea. Not only that, but don't we have enough junk laying around? It's great to offer a gift that can be used. Plus, they are so pretty! And putting together gift jars really shows that you care, taking some time and effort to create a gift.
