Gift Basket Ideas for Valentine's Gifts

Valentine's Day gift baskets

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: I love gift baskets! They’re fun to get, and they’re fun to give, and I especially enjoy making my own gift baskets to give to friends and family. I always make a few Christmas gift baskets to give, but unique gift baskets can be designed for any occasion, or for no occasion at all. Cupid will be making his annual arrival soon, so it’s not too early to be thinking about Valentine’s Day gift baskets that are filled with Valentine’s gifts. Believe me, your recipient will appreciate such a thoughtful gift. The key word here is “thoughtful.” For it to be really appreciated, you need to make it evident that you put some serious thought and planning into your Valentine’s gift basket. Just in case you have “brain block,” I’m offering some gift basket ideas.

How to make a gift basket

Before we get to specific gift basket ideas and potential Valentine’s gifts, let’s talk just a little about how to make gift baskets. I’m not a professional maker of gift baskets, but I have created some lovely and useful ones. I like for my gift baskets to be functional as well as attractive, including the container as well as the gifts themselves.

The first step in how to make a gift basket is having some idea about the size and the number of Valentine’s gifts you want to include. This will give you an idea about how large the container needs to be. The field is wide open when it comes to containers – the “basket.” Of course, you don’t actually have to use a basket, per se. Practically any type of container would work, as long as it’s in keeping with the gifts. For example, you probably wouldn’t want to place romantic Valentine’s gifts for a woman inside a mop bucket. Okay, that’s a little extreme, but you get the idea.

Romantic Valentine’s gifts for women could be arranged in any attractive container. Some gift basket ideas for this include china or porcelain bowls, silver or pewter platters, large jewelry boxes, wooden keepsake boxes, and wire mesh bath caddies. Gift baskets for men can include items that are help in a tackle box, a fishing and hunting bucket, or even a plastic tool caddy. Think outside the box, too. one of the most attractive and unique gift baskets I’ve made used old wooden cigar boxes.

Another great idea for gift basket containers is a round cheese box. You can usually get these from supermarkets for around $5. When you get the cheese box, sand it lightly, then paint it or stain it. You can make these cheese boxes really attractive by painting a design or scene on the lid. If you’re not artistic, you can use stencils. These large wooden boxes are especially nice for gift baskets for men. On the lid, you can paint a duck, a deer head, or a pair of quail. I’ve sold tons of these painted cheese boxes!

Once you’ve purchased your Valentine’s gifts and your container, you need to arrange the items in the gift basket. In my opinion, this works best if you have a couple of relatively large items, along with a few medium-sized items. The large items should be the focal point of the gift baskets, and they should be placed front and center. Next, arrange the medium-sized items. Fill in any empty spaces with small items. The completed gift basket can be placed in plastic or left uncovered.

If you want to use some sort of packing material, you’ll have several choices. Here, gift basket ideas include shredded colored paper, tissue paper, strips of newspaper, crinkle paper, wood straw, or even strips of curly ribbon. For Valentine’s Day gift baskets, you could use pink or red Easter grass. For really specific and unique gift baskets, you might want to get even more creative. For example, if you’re creating a rustic gift basket of horse items for a horse owner, you might want to use hay as a packing material.

Gift basket ideas for women’s Valentine’s gifts

You know your female recipient better than I do, so you probably already have some Valentine’s gifts in mind for your Valentine’s gift basket, but I’ll share some suggestions: small boxes of chocolates, silk flowers, lotions, bath and shower gels, small scented candles, bath salts, massage oils, lingerie, jewelry, and perfume. Small purse-size bottles of perfumes make great fillers. You might also want to include gift cards or gift certificates to local restaurants, boutiques, or spas. All these items would be perfect for romantic gift baskets.

If you have a more practical gift basket in mind, instead of romantic gift baskets, think about her hobbies and interests. Is she a gardener, an artist, or a teacher? I like receiving romantic gift baskets occasionally, but I have a very practical side that usually prefers more “usable” gifts over romantic Valentine’s gifts. I don’t think I’m completely alone here, either. Actually, my perfect Valentine’s Day gift baskets would hold a combination of practical items and traditional romantic Valentine’s gifts.

Gift baskets for men

Let’s face it, ladies – men are usually more practical than we are – even when it comes to Valentine’s gifts and Valentine’s gift baskets. As I suggested you do with practical women, think about his interests. Gift baskets for men might contain a combination of items, including edible items. Most men love food, so food gift baskets are always popular. Instead of fancy candies, think cheeses, beef or venison jerky, barbecue sauces, hot sauces, summer sausages, pretzels, and nuts.

If your guy is a fisherman, make a gift basket in a tackle box! Include hooks, line, weights, a fillet knife, and an assortment of artificial baits. For a larger collection, you might want to use a bait bucket or a cooler to hold the items. A deer hunter would appreciate a pair of warm gloves, a camo tee, ammo, a good skinning knife, buck lure, some venison jerky, and a camo cap. Golfers would enjoy golf balls, tees, golfing gloves, and gift certificates to local golf courses or pro shops.

Gift baskets are fun to put together and the container can be so many different items -- it doesn't just have to be a basket! What are some of the more creative gift baskets you've made?

Very well described how to do it. Plus if you do it yourself it will save a lot of money.

The first thing I look at when choosing gift baskets is what container is it in. Since one of the objects is to have something left as a memory after the contents are gone. So, first make sure that the container isn't a throw away themed cardboard box. You want to have the container be an elegant basket or similar container such as a vase.

Criston, I agree! I also sometimes like to use something functional for my gift baskets, like a bait bucket for an angler, a tote bag for a teacher, a gym bag for a body builder, etc. The container itself can be a gift. Thanks a bunch for reading!
