Children can look forward to this time of year as much as children in the west look forward to Christmas. This is because Chinese children will often receive gifts, treats, new clothes and if they are lucky enough to get a special red envelope, even money!
The 15 day period for Chinese New Year extends from the first new moon of the year to the first full moon that comes after the first new moon. The end of the period is marked by a celebration called the lantern festival. During the Lantern Festival thousands of brightly colored an ornate lanterns will be lit. Some say that New Year traditions such as fire crackers and even the lanterns are meant to keep evil spirits at bay.
The lanterns are also said to be a way of inviting or even celebrating the good graces of good spirits.
