Holidays in Lanzarote
Lanzarote is one of the Canary Islands, but is still a bit different than the rest. This is an exciting destination in Spain
The Canary Island, located furthest to the east, is perhaps the one that has the most exciting landscapes and nature. Lanzarote is number 3 on the list of the Norwegians' most popular Canary Island, but is probably the island that has the most to offer in terms of excursion, if you're interested in art and nature. César Manrique is the man who built most of the sculptures that can be seen on the many roundabouts in Lanzarote. He is widely regarded as the most important person from Lanzarote, and his home in Tahíche, is today turned into a museum. He was also a city planner when most tourist areas were built in the late seventies, and may well be said to be responsible for the buidling of hotels in Lanzarote. It is characterized by that very few houses are higher than the palm trees, which leads to the towns almost sliding along with the rest of the landscape.
Most tourists that are visiting Lanzarote, stay in one of the tourist areas near the ocean. The most famous are Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca, Costa Teguise and Puerto Calero. These resort towns welcomes almost 50,000 Norwegians every year, and the good climate and spectacular scenery makes many people choose to come back year after year. These towns offer plenty of activities like water sports, fishing, cycling and other sports such as windsurfing. Puerto del Carmen is perhaps the most visited, but if you are traveling with children, Playa Blanca sould be taken under consideration. Here you will find shallow beaches which is ideal for small children.
But some of the things that stands out from both Gran Canaria and Tenerife, you will not find on the beach. A bit inland on the island, there are many amazing places to visit as for example the small village of Yaiza. This little town has many times been mentioned as the most beautiful city in all of Spain, and contains small cozy squares, mixed with palm trees, flowers and Geria, Yaiza's own wine. Tahíche mentioned over here has much more to tempt you with not just the house of Cesar Manrique. You can also experience the genuine Canarian lifestyle on a chair by the curb.
El Golfo is located south of the island and has a wonderful green lagoon. The algae that live here, create the beautiful green color you can see in the water. It is not allowed to bath, but to fill up your camera should be no problem. Last but not least, the National Park of Timanfaya. Lanzarote is a volcanic island, and in Timanfaya you can experience the heat of volcanoes, and only 10 meters below the ground it can be up to 600 degrees hot. A restaurant in the mountains here are cooking just by means of this heat, and here you get served volcano fried food! These are just some of the things you can do on this wonderful island. Enjoy your visit to Lanzarote.
