The Lead Crystal Everest Globe $8,000.

"Crafted to honor the epic 1963 National Geographic Society-sponsored U.S. expedition to Mt. Everest, this is the 20" diameter Everest Globe entirely handmade of stemware-quality leaded crystal and considered by many to be the world's finest globe.

Limited Edition 260 Illuminated Commemorative Globe

Only 250 of these globes exist, and no two are alike--each is painstakingly handcrafted in Germany's Lake Constance region by more than 20 artisans including glassblowers, woodworkers, brass engravers, girdlers, and inlayers."

24 Separate Layers of Rich Color

"The brilliant world-renowned National Geographic cartography on the two-sided map is composed of 24 separate layers of rich color and crisp detail that is applied to the crystal globe once the surface has cooled, then hand-lacquered to a polished shine. Inside the globe is a 60-watt bulb controlled by an on/off foot pedal with adjustable power button to light the globe brightly or softly. When lit, the globe reveals a physical map showing minute details such as mountain ranges, ice caps, vegetation expanses, and arid lands."

6,500 Place Names - Continents, Countries and Cities

"When the light is turned off, the globe portrays a political map of the world labeled with 6,500 place names, including continents, countries, and cities. Unlike typical primary color schemes common to many globes, the map is painted with soft earth tones contrasted with the golden hue of the ocean that highlights the continental edges so the landmasses stand out subtly but clearly."

Hand-Carved Black Forest Maple and Hornbeam Base

"The hand-carved and sanded base is shaped from the finest Black Forest maple and hornbeam hardwood that is hand-finished in a deep gloss that highlights the carved details on the rim and legs."

Gleaming Brass

"The months and cardinal directions on the top of the base are delicately inlaid with iridescent mother-of-pearl cultivated from the finest non-endangered ocean shells. The meridian begins as a flat band of solid brass precisely calibrated every ten degrees by an expert engraver, then hand-curved around a wooden form by girdlers and hand-rubbed and lacquered to a gleaming shine."

Signed and Numbered

The globe comes with a brass plaque engraved with the number of the globe and a signed and numbered certificate of authenticity. White glove delivery includes unpacking and careful placement of the globe where you choose. Plugs into AC. 39" H x 31" Diam. with base. (49 lbs.)" source: hammacher.com

The Frank Lloyd Wright Floor Globe. $800

"Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the early 1900s, this floor globe is a concept that was intended for one of his Prairie Homes but never came to fruition until now. Made by Replogle Globes, crafters of fine terrestrial globes for 79 years, the floor globe is based on a sketch found in the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation archives. The globe stand exhibits the form-follows-function principle, strong horizontal lines, and simplified geometric forms that were hallmarks of the Prairie School movement. The globe is painstakingly handcrafted by artisans and the solid maple frame is carved, sanded, and stained by hand, and finished with a deep walnut stain.

4,100 Place Names

It has antique-style parchment colored oceans and shows 4,100 place names as approved by the U.S. government. Additional cartographic features include raised relief mountain ranges and shipping routes that depict famous voyages including Charles Darwin's journey to the Galapagos Islands and Christopher Columbus's expedition to the New World. The 16" globe rests at a 23.5° angle, replicating the earth's position in relation to the sun, and has a full-swing, die-cast metal meridian. Minor assembly. 39" H x 23" W. (26 lbs.)"

Mova Globe

How Globes Are Made Video

Rotating Mova Globe - No Batteries! Amazing!

"Rotates silently on its own when exposed to ambient light!

The MOVA globe is the first member of a new family of objects that come quietly to life when touched by light, without wires or batteries. The globe floats at a point of perfect balance between buoyant forces and gravitational forces, and slowly turns as it feels the force of the Earth's magnetic field and the energy carried in light. Its perpetual, quiet motion brings a tranquil point of focus to a room. Add more light and watch the Earth spin faster, dim the setting and observe it slowing. It really is an amazing sight to see!

The Mova globe works similarly to a compass in that the Earth's magnetic field makes this work!

This latest addition to the Mova Globe line features stunning satellite imagery of the planet Earth. With this cool view of the Earth from above, all can see the world through the eyes of the universe. This is a wonderful addition to any classroom, and makes for a unique object to feature on an office desk or in the science classroom!

I completely agree, these make great gifts. My Partner and I purchased a Night Light Globe for a child for Christmas - it which showed the Atlas during the day and the the constellation of stars when the room grew dark.

sallybea,

Oh, how wonderful! As you know I love night light but then to add in the Atlas and the night constellations - what a triple treat! Yes, I have night lights throughout my home. Ironically I am not afraid of the night - just love the glow it adds.

I remember the old globes from school days many decades ago. I did not realize that Frank Lloyd Wright had designed a globe even it it was not implemented. Fascinating subject!

I dated a man who loved maps and globes and I love to travel so this hub was a natural. Sadly I have no maps or globes in my home. I do hope to travel more in the future. I would rather than the experience of traveling but the memento would be suitable.
