Halloween in Cebu 2011
Halloween is a western tradition formerly called All Hallows Eve and probably one of the oldest holidays has started to make its way in the local Cebu scenery.
People both young and old alike, flocked to the Malls to take part on exciting treats that store owners had prepared for them. This has been my 3rd straight year to go trick and treating at SM City and the event continue to draw more and more participants each year. Majority of the kids decided to go as their favorite superheroes namely Superman, Batman, Robin, Flash, Spiderman, and Wonder woman. Some decided to go dark side as devils, witches, spooks, vampires, rippers and mummy. Some fashion around as royalty kings, prince and princess. There are also a couple sighting of fantasy creatures like fairies. Most of the grownups that join in the fun either dress as a witch or their favorite cosplay character but whatever it is that they have decided to wear all had fun and carrying buckets full of sweets and goodies that have been generously given by the SM in store tenants that have taken part on the event. There are also a lot of foreigner who probably taken a break from visiting the different Cebu tourist spot in order to observe and partake on this event.
On the downside this year lesser tenants participated in the event and what used to be a whole day event is now broken down to two schedule 11 am and 5 pm, also participants need to register by simply purchasing one of SM Eco-bag “cheesy” I might say. I myself didn’t register since I view this act as a cheap shoot by the SM management. The good news is out of all the tenants that participated and I manage to visit only 2 stores turned me down and refused to give us candies. My personal opinion is that this event already attract a lot of people who will most probably dine and shop at SM (revenue $$$) so shame on you for being so profit minded and squeezing more penny out of our pocket.
I hope that this event will continue for years to come and who knows maybe in a few more years Halloween will be celebrated in the streets as well and will not just be confined in the four walls of the Malls.
Bottom line is that my family and I had fun not because of how much goodies we manage to get but the time spent doing it. Actually we are already looking forward to next year.
