How to Choose a Great 50th Wedding Anniversary Present
First the Wedding
Wedding Anniversaries are special events. Let's face it, every year you spend together not only brings you closer but proves you can still live with each other. Think back to your First wedding anniversary....what a glorious time. Newlyweds celebrating a year of happiness. You've learned a little about each other and you've come through some tough tests. As time goes on each wedding anniversary takes on it's own special meaning. The tenth, the twenty-fifth, and of course the fiftieth.
You know how you'll celebrate each year but do you know how others will? Many times not. The best way you can add to their celebration is by giving them a gift. Since they've gotten to the fiftieth anniversary we're looking at a very special gift. In this day of easy divorce and living together, fifty years of marriage is a very long time!
It may seem that I am obsessed with anniversary gifts since I've already written a piece about Wedding Anniversary Gifts, but the truth is, I like to give gifts and I think we need to give special attention to the gifts we choose no matter what the occasion.
A Party to Celebrate
50th Anniversary Gift Ideas
So, what about the fiftieth Gift? Traditionally it is something "made of gold". Looking back over history it seems that during the Roman Empire, certain anniversaries were celebrated; the twenty-fifth anniversary was celebrated by the husband crowning his wife a silver wreath and crowning his wife with a gold wreath on their fiftieth. Crowning might not be a good idea today. However, this custom led to giving gifts to celebrate wedding anniversaries. Different cultures and religions acknowledge the Fiftieth anniversary. For example, in Canada, couples can receive a message from the Governor General for the 50th anniversary, Catholics can receive a Papal Blessing, and so on.
The easy choices are things made of or trimmed in gold. some examples include a gold finished or trimmed picture frame or an anniversary plate...you know, one of those decorative plates that says "Happy 50th Anniversary". Yellow or 'golden' roses would be a nice choice for flowers or maybe a "Golden Anniversary" CD of songs from the year the couple was married?
Those are the easy things to choose. Of course any gift you give and/or amount you spend depends on your financial situation and your relationship with the celebrating couple. If you are newly married or in a tight financial situation you might just want to give a pair of movie tickets or put together a photo album of the couple's fifty years together. One suggestion is to make a "Golden Wish Tree"...a tree branch, painted gold and hung with wishes for the anniversary couple. This concept could also be used to hang gift cards or money from other guests at a party.

Choosing the Gift
The best way to choose the gift is to think about the couple, what you know about them, what they like. and of course what they can use. By the time we reach our Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary most of us pretty much have what we want. What we don't need is lots of little chochkies that have to be dusted all the time! I speak with some authority since I'm celebrating my 46th Anniversary at the end of this month.
One suggestion is a Fiftieth Anniversary Throw. I don't know about the rest of you, but there are times I like to wrap up in a throw and cuddle while I watch TV. Choosing this gift might be just the right one for someone who gets chilly at night.
Everyone wears clothes, and right now tee shirts with sayings on them are at an all time popularity high. Why not buy a matching pair of tee shirts with some cute saying about being married fifty years? I saw one that says, "After Fifty Years, She still puts up with me". Of course you need to choose carefully. Someone who doesn't have a sense of humor might not appreciate funny tee shirts!
If the couple is religious you might want to buy a gift that is religious. You could choose a gold Crucifix or a pair of gold rosary beads. I'm sure other religions, besides Catholic, have some symbol you could buy in gold.
You might choose to replace their wedding goblets with nice new gold trimmed goblets to help them celebrate the occasion, or, depending on the couple you might want to choose coffee cups trimmed in gold instead.
I could go on with gift suggestions but this is about you choosing the best gift. The best way to choose the best gift is to do it with your heart. Know the people you are buying for and find out what suits them best or better yet, a gift that has meaning for the couple. It would be nice to make your gift a memorable one that shows you care. Happy gift hunting!
