My Five Favorite House Warming Gifts

House Warming Gifts

At the end of every real estate transaction is a sigh of relief. Now, all attention is turned to the household. Moving day is an extremely hectic day. Everything in the house needs a new place to reside. Decisions about what goes where consume the new homeowner. A gift that eases some of the stress of the move is pleasant to receive.

The gift ideas mentioned here are simple and inexpensive, nevertheless homeowners have expressed so many sentiments over these gifts that now they have become the primary gifts I give as housewarming gifts.

Household Appliance Binder

A household binder gives the homeowner a place to keep owner’s manuals and warranties.

Household Appliance Binder

One of my favorite gifts is a large binder that holds all of the owner manuals and warranties for the household appliances and equipment. It makes referencing them quick and easy.

When giving the binder as a gift, you can make it even more useful by placing at least 50 clear plastic sheet protectors in the binder, along with paper clips to keep the manuals from falling out.

Go the extra mile by snapping a picture of the house and placing that picture in the first sheet protector.

Local Magazine Subscription

Local magazines are a great way to learn about a new location.

One Year Subscription to a Local Magazine

When someone is new to an area, it is fun to read about the local area. A subscription to a local magazine is a great way to help people learn about local events and characteristics of the area.

Many regions, if not cities have magazines dedicated to helping people learn about the culture. These magazines feature arts, festivals, and historical information that is unique to the area.

Make the gift especially unique by including a map of the local area and nearby towns so people can see where things are located and how to get there.

Change of Address Cards

Create Address Change Cards. An added touch would be to print a photo of the house on the other side.

Change of Address Cards

With all the things that need to be done before moving into a new home, sending out address change notices is a chore that is often overlooked or left to the last minute. Give the gift of personalized change of address notices that people can send to their family, friends, and magazine subscriptions. Have at least 50 cards printed with the message, “We’ve moved! Here is our new address.” Then place postcard stamps on half of the cards; people may not need to mail all of the cards, instead they may have an opportunity to hand deliver the cards to co-workers or people they see at church and other events.

To make this gift more special, you could have the homeowner give you the names and addresses of the people they need to notify and then print out address labels for the homeowner.

House Number Emblem

Giving a gift with the homeowner’s house number is a gift that will be cherished for a long time.

House Numbers

This gift is very special. Oftentimes, when people move into a new house, one of the things they want to do is highlight their address. Giving the gift of address number plates or individual numbers of the house address is a gift they will cherish for a long time. I’ve seen people place the additional plate over the garage, as well as on the post that holds the mailbox.

In line with the theme of the address plate, you could hire someone to paint the house address number on the curb.

Note: Before having the house number painted on the curb, check with the city where the house is located for ordinances that may prohibit painting house numbers on the curb.

Eating Out is a Stress Buster

Nothing beats a warm meal at the end of a hectic day.

Dinner's on You

Moving day is a stressful event. With boxes scattered all over the place, furniture here and there, an empty refrigerator, and things that need to be assembled and connected, preparing a nice meal is the last thing on most people’s mind. Anything that relieves some of the stress is appreciated to the max.

Find out what type of food the family enjoys and then give them a gift card to treat them out to a fabulous meal at a local restaurant.

If you want to go the extra mile, throw in tickets for the entire family to go to a local movie theater. If there is a young child in the family, you could even set up child care for them.

Be Aware of Tax Laws and Gift Giving

I enjoy giving gifts and people enjoy receiving them. What's important is that you give a gift that is something the homeowner can use. As you can see, gifts do not have to be expensive to be appreciated.

When giving gifts, be conscientious of gift-giving laws and what’s deductible and what’s not. Consult with your tax accountant or tax attorney for specific details.

I'm interested in reading about other gift ideas. What are some house warming gifts that you have given or received?

Hello Payal N Naik. Thanks so much. I like the magazine subscription, too because it gives the new homeowner a way to become submersed into the local area.

Thank you for your feedback, Lady_E. Magazine subscriptions seem to be popular among buyers who are new to the area. Providing a subscription to the local area helps them become familiar with their surroundings.

Hi Sunshine625. The binder is really helpful. I went to an office supply store and bought the largest binder I could find. I am absolutely glad I have it for keeping my appliance manuals and household information in the same place.

Hi poetryman6969. I have never heard of hatch green chilies. I like chilies, so I would have felt like that was a golden gift.

Hello pstraubie48. The binder is definitely a helpful item. I have one for my home and it comes in handy for keeping appliance information all in the same place. I know right where to go to get the information I need.

It is certainly a cool thing to welcome new neighbors with a gift. Voted up for thoughtfulness.

The most unique house warming gift I remember receiving was a jelly or was it a jam, made out of hatch green chilies. I was in New Mexico at the time and those New Mexicans would put hatch green chilies on corn flakes if you let them.

The binder is such a splendid idea. My daughter and her little fam have just moved to a new place and this would be just perfect. It is so easy for things to get misplaced during this transition.

You, georgescifo, are so right about being aware of giving redundant gifts. When I had a house warming party for my own house, I can't even count the number of vases I received.

Hi Marlene, You have projected some of the most useful and economical house warming gifts that one can think of. I also love to gift something that is unique and at the same time useful to the reciever. Need to make sure to avoid common gift items that the received might get a lot during the house warming ceremony.

I agree with you, peachpurple. Moving day is exhausting. No one wants to cook on that day. It's easier to leave the boxes packed and get away from it all for a while.

i would prefer the eating out. I mean, after moving in, nobody is interested in cooking right now

Hello Margaret Schindel. Thank you for your kind feedback. I think, of all the gifts, the simplest one is the most useful and appreciated one. The appliance manual is something I use regularly myself and clients from as far back as 25 years ago still tell me how valuable it is to them.

Hi Marlene, these are just wonderful ideas for house warming gifts! My parents made themselves one of those appliance manual binders. My husband and moved in with them to take care of them for the last several years of their lives and then inherited their house, and we've found that appliance manual binder to be absolutely invaluable. I also love the idea that you gave housewarming gifts to the new homeowners after you sold them their new houses! I'm sure they really appreciated your thoughtfulness, and those memorable thoughtful gestures may even have helped you gain some new referrals. I certainly hope they did. Thank you for these terrific ideas!

Hello Writer Fox. I know you're right about houseplants being a great housewarming gift. Taking it to the next level would be to find out what plants they had to leave behind and then giving that particular plant as a gift. Thanks, Writer Fox. Plants are, indeed, a great idea.

Great ideas for hose warming gifts, Marlene. If you want another idea, I often give houseplants and people seem to appreciate that especially if they have moved from out-of-state and had to leave their collection. Voted up!

Hi RTalloni. I use to give expensive gifts, thinking that the more I spent on the gift was a show of how much I appreciated the client. But then when I bought a house and the seller left a gift for me (the buyer) it was a binder with all the manuals and a picture of the house. That was the most thoughtful gift I had ever received. I took note of the gifts I was giving and decided to do away with the meaningless gifts like crystal vases and give more thoughtful gifts that people could use and appreciate.

Not all realtors give a housewarming gift as nice as your examples. They should take note! These are very nice ideas, and could be useful to anyone celebrating with new homeowners.

These are great ideas as house warming gifts and very unique!

I love to gift Home Decoration materials as gifts for house warming, such as Fancy curtains, Bed covers, Cushions for sofas, Carpets, wall hangings or paintings or even some potted indoor plants.

Thanks for sharing your interesting and useful gift ideas!

Hi Bill, thank you for your feedback. It's interesting what comes to mind. A past client called to say thank you for a gift I gave her over twenty years ago. I was thinking to myself how simple it was, but she still owns the house and is still happy. All I did was give her new numbers to place over the door. The client's kind words from a call out of the blue prompted this hub.
