Navaratri Glitters

Navaratri Galore

There are many great festivals in Hinduism that give joy to the people. Navaratri is one among them. It literally means nine nights. The festival lasts for nine days (or nine nights). People decorate their houses with artistic beauty. Dolls are arranged in steps. Usually the decoration and arrangement of dolls are made in nine steps indicating nine nights of splendor. But in some houses it is made in seven steps or five steps also. Always odd number of steps is selected.

Toy Park

The steps are covered with a silk sari of suitable colour or colour paper with the desired pattern. Then dolls are arranged in such a way to attract attention. These dolls can be idols of Hindu gods and goddesses or they can be just playful things. Funny items are also selected. A small park is constructed to attract the attention of the children. A welcome sign board is depicted by grass or some other reed. Then toy trees, benches and colorful flowers decorate the park.

Ladies’ Festival

Navaratri is a festival for all but ladies are given more importance. Ladies visit their relatives, friends and colleagues. Ladies are welcome guests in every house. The host is also a lady of that house. Blouse pieces, saris, sweets and snacks are distributed. Some snacks are prepared especially for the occasion and distributed. The guest lady in turn invites the host lady to visit the house. In South India Navaratri is a special function.

Navaratri Glitters

Lighting decoration adorns the steps where dolls are displayed. Colour lights in different shapes like stars shine decoratively. Visiting ladies have to compulsorily sing songs. These songs are usually Carnatic music and sung in praise of different Hindu gods and goddesses. Navaratri celebrations start at around sunset and last till the city goes to sleep. During the day time preparations are made for snacks and other items to be distributed as gifts.

Saraswati, Goddess of Education

At the end of Navaratri, Saraswati Puja comes. Goddess Saraswati is the Goddess for education. By designing a woman as the Goddess of education, one can understand the importance for girls’ education among the Hindus. On this day, students keep their school books and notebooks before the idol of Goddess Saraswati and pray for their success in the school examinations. Next day they take out the books from the Puja and read them with dedication and sincerity.
