New Year's Eve Toast

Many of us will be proposing a toast or watching someone else propose one at our New Year's Eve party or as we watch the ball drop in the comfort of our homes. Proposing a toast is practiced during many holidays such as New Year's Eve and at many functions such as wedding receptions.

Toasting someone is wishing them goodwill or congratulating them on something. When toasting, some of us simply raise our glass in the air and propose a toast. While others actually touch or clink glasses together. In Ancient Greece people would make sure their glasses clinked together during toasting so that their beverage would slosh into the other person's glass. This would make sure that no one was trying to poison the other. Both glasses would end up with the same beverage in it and all would feel comfortable drinking after that.

The word toast came from the Greeks and Romans actually placing a piece of toast on the bowl of wine. It would lay or float in the bowl or goblet of wine to absorb some of it's acidity. It was custom for the last person to receive the bowl to eat the piece of toast too.

Proposing A Toast

Now that we know a little about where toasting came from it is time to get your toasting on!

  • Make sure it is an audience appropriate toast.
  • Please do not have one too many drinks before you propose your toast.

  • Begin with, “I would like to propose a toast....”

  • Be sincere.

  • Make sure you have prepared your speech if you have one.

  • Don't go on and on. Get to the point.

  • Face everyone with your back to no one

  • End your toast with your glass raised high in the air and end the toast with “cheers”

Receiving A Toast

  • Don't stand until the toast to you is over.
  • Always thank the person giving you the toast.

  • Never refuse the toast or not drink to your own toast. It is considered rude.
