There are some obscure nooks and crannies of this world even in this twenty-first century of ours, you know, although it's sometimes hard to believe. It feels, often, like we know every inch of it, what with the internet and GPS tracking and satellites and whatnot. How can there be anything or anywhere or anything that isn't immediately available for scrutiny with all our sophisticated technology! More to the point, how can there be any place we haven't heard of?

Maybe there's no place you haven't heard of. But I have to admit, the placename Aruba only causes me to scratch my head, and murmur, 'Wha'?' Admission: I had to go look it up on Wikipedia in order to find out where it even was! (Clue: island. Caribbean. Oh all right, less of a clue, more of a honkin' great answer.) So, probably great for holidays and with lovely beaches and scenery, right? What about the attractions of Aruba diving? What more do you need to know? What do you already know about the Aruba island?

Nothing, probably, unless you have a present to buy, and it's for a person who has an uncanny obsession with the place. What you going to do then? You're going to have to mug up on all things Aruban, aren't you! The things you do for your pals!

But no, maybe there are shortcuts you could take, if you really are obliged to find a present with an Aruban flavour about it? (Lord knows you could always go the tacky memento route: get a set of glassware engraved with the national flag, or just get them a damn keyring with the appropriate sentiment on it. 'Aruba forever!')

But don't give up on something more imaginative! With a place so blessed with natural beauty, there are surely local artists producing their own impressions of the local skyline and beautyspots. And with the advent of the internet, it's never been easier to buy art online and have it shipped to your door. Why not surprise the object of your gift-buying efforts with an artistic endeavour?
