September Bizarre Holidays and Famous Birthdays

September, the ninth month of the year, is the month that many children dread and many parents can hardly wait for. The children go back to school, the air starts becoming a little cooler, and life settles down at home. It is also a month filled with funny holidays, some fun facts and a few historical trivia thrown in. For instance, did you know that the U. S. treasury was first established on a September day in 1789? Or that Band-Aids were invented in September? There are more little interesting tidbits like this that I will be happy to share with you.

  • It is believed that the first observance of Labor Day was a parade held in New York on September 5, 1882.
  • September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
  • On September 24, 1984 a new amazing world record for the longest kiss was set. It lasted for 17 day and 10 and 1/2 hours.
  • The Constitution of the United States was signed on September 17, 1787.
  • On September 3, 1783, Great Britain signed the Treaty of Paris, ending the Revolutionary War.
  • September is Better Breakfast Month.
  • On September 9, 1850, California became the 31st state.
  • The very first comic strip appeared in a newspaper on September 11, 1875.
  • On September 14, 1814, during the attack on Fort McHenry, Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner.
  • For those who remember the Brady Bunch, it made it's debut on September 26, 1969.
  • On September 11, 2011, all air traffic was stopped for the first time in history due to the 911 attack on the United States.

Never knew it existed, but now that I realize there's a National Play-Doh Day, I'll have to get my daughter some new Play-Doh to celebrate. She loves it!
