Just a Few Options

Boyfriends / fiances / husbands
Teachers
Kid's classmates
Co-workers
Friends
Bosses

Where can you find mason jars?

  • Big box stores. Mason jars are well stocked during prime canning season (summer and fall), but you should be able to find a limited stock all year round in the kitchen section.
  • Big box craft stores. As so many people do use mason jars for crafts and cooking gifts, many major craft stores stock jars as well.
  • Thrift stores. Thrift and second hand stores are hit or miss, but you never know when you'll be able to score jars for cheap.
  • Amazon and eBay. Amazon has very competitive prices on sets of new jars in a variety of sizes and with varying features (i.e. wide mouth, with handles). If you have a prime account and can get the free shipping, this is a great deal on bulk sets. Don't forget to check the current eBay listings as well.
  • Garage sales / Craigslist. If you're not in a hurry to get jars, keep your eyes out on Craigslist and other local sites for local listings and mentions in garage sale advertisements.

Cake in a Jar / Layered Desserts

There is something about a single serving dessert that is very appealing. Layered desserts in clear jars also have a great visual aesthetic. There are a wide variety of cakes, including cheesecakes, that are perfect for layering in mason jars. Red velvet is always a popular choice. If you get stuck searching for a Valentine's Day specific mason jar dessert, branch out a little bit and then figure out how to customize a more general layered dessert for Valentine's Day.

Homemade Desserts and Dessert Mixes

Dessert mixes are another classic gift choice, and there's no reason why you can't gift them in mason jars. Grab the cookie mix of your choosing and then decorate your jars for Valentine's Day. You can also keep it simple and make cookies or other small desserts (i.e. brownies / bar cookies, bite-size hand pies) and package them in mason jars.

Savory Foods

Most people go for sweets when they give food gifts for Valentine's Day. If you're looking for options for someone without a big sweet tooth or you simply want to mix up the routine this year, choose a salty option, savory food, or sweet / salty combination. Nuts, dried fruit, trail mix, granola, and popped or un-popped popcorn are all great choices.

Consider the following sayings for savory / salty food gift tags:

  • Nuts: "I'm nuts about you."
  • Popcorn kernels: "My heart pops for you."
  • Dried bananas: "I'm going bananas over you."

Tip: Are you looking for paper straws? Check Etsy or Paper Source.

Purely Decorative

There is nothing wrong with giving a mason jar gift that purely serves as decoration with no other intended function. Think about filling it with paper straws or paper or fabric hearts. If you choose paper hearts, consider writing favorite Valentine's Day words, phrases, or quotes or reasons why you love your significant other or kids on them.

As you finish up your mason jar gifts for Valentine's Day, don't forget to consider decoration / embellishment for the tops.

I love Mason Jar gifts! One of my students' moms made one for me filled with M&Ms and it had a cute little Teacher poem to go with it.

Some great ideas here. I made bath salts and soup mix for Christmas gifts this year and used jars as packaging. I saved money by recycling applesauce and artichoke jars etc. just washing and tying a bow around the lid to spruce it up. It was very fun and I think people really appreciate a homemade gift. Sharing this hub.

Crystal, you're right that many people do really appreciate homemade gifts. Saving your own jars and using them as packaging is a great idea. I'm sure that people enjoyed your bath salts and soup mixes!
