Valentines Day Quotes; Quotes About Love

A Lovely Little Thing Called Love

In contemplation of why Valentines Day stands out as a holiday of love, I have come to the conclusion that it is not alone. Every holiday -in essence- is about love. New Years is about celebrating the love of life, time, and change. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is about the love of one man whom changed the world; about loving and embracing humanity. July 4th is about the love of freedom, neighbor, and country. Christmas is about the love of God, Jesus, faith, and family. And, so on...

Valentines Day, although sometimes viewed as another ploy to further consumerism, is a day in which we do not necessarily love more, but a day in which we focus on spreading that love.

Conflicting stories circulate as to the history of Valentines Day... whether it is in honor of a heroic saint or of an ancient Roman tradition of purification, cleansing, and fertility. Regardless of what is believed, Valentines Day is presently regarded as a time to say "I Love You". Show it with flowers, candy, or by simply doing something nice for someone. Valentines Day is a day devoted to that highly-acclaimed four letter word... Love.

"Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails...But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love." 1 Corinthians 13:4-7,13

"You know you're in love when you can't fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams." Dr. Seuss

Love

I am not a famous poet, humanitarian, or politician. I rarely say wise and profound things, and when I do, it seems to happen when no one else is near (of course). So, I have compiled my favorite list of love quotes that other people have said at some point in history.

Quotes can be used in cards or on valentines, or as an added touch to a conversation with a loved one.

"Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies." - Aristotle

"Love is the irresistible desire to be irresistibly desired." - Robert Frost

"The only true gift is a portion of yourself." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses." - Proverb 10:12

"There is only one happiness in life: to love and be loved." - George Sand

"Love is friendship set on fire." - Jeremy Taylor

"Where there is love there is life." - Mohandas Ghandi

"Love is something eternal; the aspect may change, but not the essence." - Vincent Van Gogh

"Let us always meet each other with a smile, for the smile is the beginning of love." - Mother Teresa

"We are all a little weird and life's a little weird, and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness and call it love." - Dr. Seuss

"Love will draw an elephant through a keyhole." - Samuel Richardson

"The one thing we can never get enough of is love. And the one thing we never give enough is love." - Henry Miller

"Everything is clearer when you're in love." - John Lennon

"What the world needs now is love." - Hal David (sung by Jackie DeShannon)

Thank you for reminding me that love is a verb. 1 Corinthians is such a profound and pure description of love. Thank you for taking the time to write this Hub. You said you "rarely say wise and profound things..." but you knocked it out of the ball park with this hub.

Wow, Nancy, that is a really nice comment. Thank you! I do love that verse very much. It reminds me that I am human, but am fully capable of loving beyond comprehension.

I am glad that you like the hub and quotes. Thank you, again, for your comment!

"Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies."

It is a beautiful quote by the famous Greek philosopher and writer, Aristotle.

Another quote of his:

"Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work."

That quote is for your writing on hubpages. You always bring us the most enjoyable hubs.

Veronica -- Your writing is truly an example of perfection.

Thank you.

Why, thank you, Sannel! I think that this may be the most and longest that I've blushed... ever! =]

Aristotle was a wise, wise man. He was a primary focus of mine while taking a Philosophy course years ago. Quite an interesting fellow!

I have heard that quote before, and love it still. Thank you for adding it! =]

I appreciate -as always- your kind words, and hope that you are doing well!

Veronica

I had to come back and read these inspirational quotes again. You have written a very wise and profound hub! "Let us always meet each other with a smile, for the smile is the beginning of love." - Mother Teresa.

Oh, how I wish more people would follow such a simple yet beautiful act.

I would like to link this to my Sensual Chocolate hub if you do not mind?

Thanks!
