Why have our patriotic holidays (Memorial, Veterans & July 4) become so co-opted by consumerism?
Because we don't have any laws that prohibit companies from taking advantage of holidays or holiday icons. This means that companies have free reign to use or distort war veterans, Uncle Sam, Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny or historical figures any way they wish.
Put simply, the answer to your question is, because the companies CAN co-opt them.
Supply and demand is the answer. I never buy that junk they sell during holidays. If people would not buy it - no one would sell it or even show up on holidays.
Supply and demand - especially in times of bad economy as we have in the world these days.
