   Is mother's day really a day to celebrate mothers or is it a commercial cash grab?
   
   It is said that mother's day is the 2nd biggest spending holiday in the US with consumers shelling out over 14 billion to make mom happy for 1 day. Would you prefer if Mother's day was less commercialized and it was a day spent with family without all the hype and expense attached?

   Mothering Sunday is an ancient celebration in England from long before the commercialisation of the day.  Mothers  Day in the USA is a much younger celebration and seems to have been hijacked by retailers as a good excuse to part the unwary from their cash.

   Mother's day is a special day where children show their wholehearted appreciation for their mothers. Some of these children express their love by buying gifts from retail shops, so these retail shops earn profits, lots of them. The retail shops are not pressuring people to buy gifts for their mothers. It is the children's decision to spend money on that.

      Sorry, that is nonsense, the retail shops spend vast amounts on advertising aimed at their target buyers for any celabratory event, advertising works otherwise it wouldn't be active.

   If you give or send handmade cards and gifts, it is worth to celebrate Mother's Day then. If you purchase them, that is commercial cash grab where retailer earn BIG BUCKS on this one day event. Chocolates and flowers are the biggest and most sought gifts for mom. Therefore, these retailers are celebrating this event for money . not for love.

   It is what you make it. I don't think of it as a commercial cash grab although stores will try to exploit it as such. Quality time spent visiting mom might be the greatest gift. It depends on the mom and how much she values material things. An expensive gift might represent to her a measure of your love.
