How do you decide what funeral to attend and what funeral not to?

When it comes to funeral decorum, there are certain times when a person dies and I just don't know whether or not I'm required to attend the funeral. A friend's aunt for example died some years ago & I was unable to attend but I believe she feels I should have been there. How do you decide the best practice?

I don't go to many funeral. If it's someone I know very well or a parent of someone I know well I go. Other than that I stay away send flowers, food or a card. I would not go to a friend's aunt's funeral unless I knew the aunt well. I would send something. If it had been her parent than you would for sure go. I know people that go to everyone's funeral and I always think it's just because their nosey.  If you can't go you can't go just send a nice card or a little bud vase of flowers. It doesn't have to be anything big just a kind word will do.

That's a tough question. I guess it depends on how close you are to the person or if a friend/family member wants you there. I don't think there is a best practice and it's based on an individual basis.

After having a close family member pass eight weeks ago, my attitude toward funerals has changed. I have been to many funerals over the years, but went because I felt obligated to go to many of them. It is so important to the family to have friends and loved ones present during that final memorial. My purpose in attending funerals in the future will be to support the family as best I can. It is also an excellent time to remember that person and say goodbye. Most often, good memories about the individual are shared and their life is celebrated. That is a good thing.
