Is it acceptable nowadays to give people money as a Christmas present?

My grandchildren and son say that they would prefer to go out and choose something for themselves, possibly in the sales, and that it is a waste of money to get something they didn't particularly need or want; whereas I and my daughter feel it is nicer to give a surprise. I know some people say a Gift Voucher might be the solution, but that does restrict the donee to a specific store, whereas cash gives them freedom

I personally think that giving cash is just fine, and greatly appreciated. Yes, there are those that like to buy a sweater or clothing item and wrap it because it seems more personal. But, unless you are making the gift yourself, why not put the cash in a card and let them pick out exactly what they want (or many times what they NEED). No one wants to tell you that they really need to buy a tank of gas, but it will get them to their job for a week--and it is GREATLY appreciated.
I think if you put thought into the card, or you put a little cash in with the homemade gift (cookies and cash is always good for a college student), the recipient will be thrilled. They are NOT going to say "grandma doesn't love me, she just gave me cash." On a final note, if you try to buy electronics or video games, you easily could get the wrong one and returning the items or exchanging can be next to impossible. My two teen sons love a gift card, but cash is even better!

My MIL always gives everyone a check now. The kids all really like it, I think, in the past, Grandma's idea of a good gift for them generally missed the mark. I prefer money to a gift card, as those often go unused and wasted. I like the idea of giving an actual gift, but if you really just don't know what a person wants or likes it's better to give money than to waste it.

I think it's just as acceptable as giving a gift card.  And gift cards are actually worse to get in my opinion.

It is acceptable. It also comes across as lazy. Giving money can be embarrassing when two people give money to each other.
