What are some reasonable New Year's Resolutions that might actually be kept?

Do you have some practical suggestions? Some that are easier to keep than others?

Anyone serious about taking advantage of New Year's resolutions will think reasonably:

    • Planning to read a new book once a month is better than simply committing to reading more.

    • To plan to walk a little more and improve diet is better than to plan on losing 40 pounds in 2 months.

Benefitting from the opportunity a new year offers is smart, but some simply revel in making resolutions so they can exercise their freedom to break them.  New Year's resolutions are an interesting concept to think about.  smile

I resolve to be a better person! It should not require any enormous effort- but it is as easy as making the right, ethical decisions consistently; not taking the easy way out, but taking the ethical way rather.

That's a resolution we can all make and keep - what do you think?

Two years ago I resolved to learn the piano again (I used to play it years ago but stopped due to my teacher's death and never finding another teacher) and by February 2011 I was going to piano classes with a teacher that my friend recommended. The teacher and I are very close friends now!

I also resolved to be a more spontaneous, fun person, and I'm glad to say that I'm getting there - I go out on random trips with friends, and we just try to make a good time out of every situation.

Another one I did in the past was to drink more water - I try to drink a certain amount of glasses of water a day, and I found that I was able to do this, especially when I keep track by keeping log of how many I drink.

I was trying to do the water thing but failed. I should try again. I also need to get back into the piano! Gosh, I need to relax and have more fun, too. Dang, I should just follow all your suggestions!!!

Among the New Year's resolutions that I make every year (yes, every year) is the one to remind myself to live in the moment -- yesterday's gone and tomorrow may never come. I don't mean that morosely but how many times have we looked back and thought what a good time we would have had if we'd only not taken our worries to the party? I'll again commit myself to living in the "now" and enjoying every moment of every day. Happy New Year Everyone!

It seems that losing weight, exercising, quit smoking, etc. are the the ones many try to shoot for but end up forgetting about by February.

Here is one I wish I had done and kept up with when my mother was alive: make it a habit to call and/or go see the ones you love.  We get so wrapped up in the busy parts of our lives that we forget about the things we need to be making time for.  It may be a person or a club or a church, etc.  Whatever it is for each person, I think it would relieve stress and help some of the problems like weight loss and smoking.  Plus, you might get rid of regrets that you might have had or will have later if you devote your time to being with others.

    Great question!

Great answer, Susan. I need to focus on visiting my parents more whhile they are still here. I think that's a great resolution. Thanks!

That is such a great answer... I have had a few regrets about not spending more time with people who passed on. Thanks for making me think - and I hope to fulfill your suggestion.

I don't need a particular day to take any resolution. If I find anything which I wanna change in myself, I do it; then & there only.

These three, "losing weight, exercising, quit smoking" are very popular.

I don't smoke though since high school. I am exercising rarely and I over eat always.

This is bad. I drink too much with friends.

I think the best gift to Jesus from us Christians is our repentance and the change of our bad habits.

Help me pray for this, I am doing this just today, Dec. 24!

I agree. I could pray for the same things. It's hard to show restraint, I think.
