8 Incredibly Easy DIY Halloween Costumes for Guys
It's that spooky time of the year again!
Let's face facts - the biggest dilemma of going to a Halloween party is figuring out what you're going to dress up as. Some people spend the whole year planning their outfits. Usually, the rest of us just want a costume that is simple, easy to recognize, and affordable to make.
Not to worry - the costumes on this list are all easy to put together, ranging from well planned to something that can be thrown together at the last minute before heading out the door. Each character includes a small list of what items you'll need.
In terms of resources, most of these costumes can be made with items you already have in your wardrobe. A trip to the local thrift store can also prove useful. Plus, the internet (especially YouTube) is full of great tutorials on how to create your own props.
1. Changing Superhero Guy
This one would definitely be a great conversation starter. We all know that famous scene from most superhero movies (the classic Superman comes to mind) when he runs to the nearest phone booth or alleyway to change into his costume. Well, what would happen if halfway through he was interrupted?
- Button down shirt
- Super hero shirt/costume with logo (to be worn underneath the shirt)
- Glasses (optional)
2. Pi Patel from 'Life of Pi'
Based on the best-selling book, the movie was a box office success and won many prizes. Once again very iconic, this costume based on Pi Patel during his days of survival at sea is very easy to make. Due to its few materials, it’s a great option to throw together at the last minute.
- Baggy pants (preferably a light colour)
- Blue cloth wrapped around your head
- Stuffed tiger to carry (optional, but would be a great prop to carry!)
Another funny idea would be to add the mathematical Pi sign (π) painted somewhere on your person, like maybe on the ‘turban’ or in body paint.
3. Logan/Wolverine from X-Men
Wolverine has a classic look that is easy to recreate, and is instantly recognizable. For added realistic effect, you can add rips and stains in the clothing.
- White tank
- Gelled hair
- Drawn on sideburns
- Fake Wolverine claws
- Cigar (optional)
4. Han Solo
What can we really say about Han Solo, besides being one of the most iconic heroes in movie history? The Captain of the Millennium Falcon is always a favourite at pop culture conventions and dress up parties, and Halloween is no exception.
- Long sleeved light coloured tee
- Dark coloured vest
- Dark skinny cut pants
- Belt with large buckle
- Fake gun prop
5. Indiana Jones
The minute you saw this name on the list, I bet you started humming the famous theme song:
Luckily, everyone's favourite archeologist's trademark look is super easy to throw together.
- brown leather jacket
- brown/dark pants
- button down shirt
- small satchel/bag
- fake gun prop
- fake whip prop (optional)
- that infamous fedora hat!
A fun idea would be to include a golden idol prop, like the one that Indy stole from the temple in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
6. Pornstache/ George Mendez from Orange is the New Black
From the Netflix hit series ‘Orange is the New Black’, Pornstache is the guy that we all love to hate. His uniform is simple, but with the right attitude (and of course the ‘stache) you’ll be easily recognized.
- Blue button down shirt
- Black pants
- Hair gelled back
- Any police accessories (handcuffs, badges, portable radios, etc. These will make it look more genuine!)
7. Where's Waldo?
One of the most recognizable pop culture characters, this lovable guy is one of the easiest on this list to recreate.
- Blue jeans
- Red and white striped sweater or long sleeved shirt
- Thick black glasses
- Red beanie
- Walking stick (optional)
- Map (optional)
8. Napoleon Dynamite
This small budget movie from 2004 wound up being a massive success, with a cult following that is still very strong until today.
Napoleon is the definition of an awkward teenager, and his ‘too cool to care’ look can easily mimicked. Sigh a lot, roll your eyes, and express your displeasure at the world. Also be sure to quip some of his famous sayings, like:
“Tina, you fat lard, come get some dinner!”
“You gonna eat your tots?”
“I’m gonna do whatever I feel like doing, gosh!”
- Vote for Pedro white T-shirt
- Blue jeans
- Thick glasses
- Gelled hair (if possible, into curls)
- Chunky sneakers, or anything that can pass as his famous “moon boots”
BONUS IDEA: grab two more friends and go as Napoleon, his brother Kip and their friend Pedro!
