What are Jelly Beans?

Jelly beans are small bean-shaped sugar candies with soft candy shells and thick gel interiors. The confection comes in a wide variety of colors and flavors.

It is generally thought that jelly beans first surfaced in 1861 when Boston confectioner William Schrafft urged people to send his jelly beans to soldiers during the American Civil War.

Generally speaking, most consumers enjoy the flavor of jelly belly's more than jelly beans the flavors are astounding and quite exotic, also with so many different flavors, there's sure to be one to suit your taste-buds.

The flavors, which are limited only by the candy makers, there will be more so expect to see more flavors around the corner.

It's hard to find many facts about Jelly beans, where were they first sold, I know they have been part of my diet since the 1940s, still one of my favorite sweets.

But what I remember most of all about Jellybeans is that many times my mother a diabetic, using them for hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) a quick rescue dose of sugar, which could be carried in a handbag, to keep her from getting really sick.

National Jelly Bean Day, is a hero in my eyes, which I'm pleased to be part of, by making this day become known worldwide and maybe have an International Jellybean or Jelly Belly's day also.

Researching national jelly bean day

Jelly beans is not only a sweet to eat, but if you search on the internet you will see there are many cookies made with these little colourful sweeties, and do they look yummy.

While searching, I was coming up with this "Jelly belly" word instead of jelly beans (which I had never heard of before I started this article) and was curious, what was the difference between jelly beans and jelly bellies, as they did not look any different to me.

The only difference I could find, was Jelly Belly beans has a lot more flavours (about 90) than the regular Jelly Beans and less calories, each bean contains zero fat and just 4 calories, which is good having less calories for the diet conscious person.

Also President Ronald Reagan, was well known for his love of jelly beans.

Jelly beans are regarded with some affection by health professionals, for the low calorie, fat-free, and suitable for vegetarians, coeliacs, dairy and nut intolerants, and also quickly satisfy the appetite.
