Once upon a time, (this is no fairy tale) in a far away time of yesteryear, lived a busy single mother raising five children and working a full time job .
I am blessed, and one of those blessings came in the form a grandmother who baby-sat for me. This enabled my children to be with people who loved them instead of strangers. It was a blessing for me to because I didn’t have to worry about their care and safety. Thanks Nana, and I know you're still watching over us from above.
Growing up, my mother and grandmother always made my clothes. One year for Christmas, my grandmother ask what I wanted and I replied, “I want a real store bought dress.” She laughed and said, “OK honey, we’ll see what we can do.”
Christmas morning came and I rushed down stairs to open my packages. There, under the tree was a large and beautifully wrapped box with my name on it. I immediately started tearing the paper off throwing it in complete disorder. When I removed all the wrapping, I looked up at my grandma and she was expressionless, “open it,” she said, “Let’s see what's inside.”
I opened the box and WOW; I was stunned! There in front of me was the most beautiful dress I had ever seen. It had a princess styled waistline, emphasized by a thin belt, and an Asian neckline. The color was light gold and enhanced by a beautiful dark gold brocade pattern. She must have spent a fortune on that dress, and I held on to it for years.
Now, when I look back, I realize how much my mother and grandmother loved me. I also realize how every stitch they took on that old singer sewing machine was done with great love and tireless perfection.
Here are some old fashioned patterns for you to enjoy!

I'm truly touched. It is a blessing to receive love from our parents / grand parents. The memories they leave, can be cherished for a long time even after they are not around us anymore. Thx for sharing such a lovely story with us.
Thank you anjalichugh for your kind acknowledgement of this article...I hold them close always and I am blessed for having had them in my life.
My mother sewed alot, especially when we were in grade school. I wish I had that skill!
It is so easy, you would find it very relaxing, and fulfilling...Give it a try and they do give classes at some of the craft stores too...
Thanks for visiting and your comment....
What a wonderful story Nancy, thanks for sharing with us.
Thanks Journey---It was one of those loving gestures that touched my heart in an unforgettable way.
Nancy's Niche,
This is a beautiful story and I can really relate. As my mother's only daughter amongst all my brothers! She adorned me plentifully with her wonderfully made creations from Vogue, Butterick to McCalls to her very own originals, on her Singer Sewing Machine. In her later years she purchased a PFAFF. There was hardly a week that she did not make me a new dress while growing up!
When I married I realized all the time and love she spent putting into those many many dresses. For my reception she also made me a special gown. I am forever grateful for such memories.
Thank You for sharing!
Blessings
DeBorrah, Thanks for sharing your wonderful memories with me. My mother sewed for others as well. When my uncle married, she designed and made my aunts wedding dress. It was beautiful and made the bride even more radiant then she already was.
My Grandmother and Mother have passed but the memories they left behind cheer me up. I believe memories are a support system left in place by our loved ones…
