this is therapy?
My job is a recreational therapist, working with the elderly.......
I do all kind of things with them to relieve the boredom, but of all the things i have ever done, in all the nursing homes Bingo has always been popular. We play board games, paint, make cards, do crosswords, but the room fills up when they know bingo is about to start...
I have to tell you that i hate the game with a passion. What i do love though is to see the pleasure some of the folk get from an hour long session, of this game. of course they don not pay to play, and the prizes we give them are very small. It may be some toiletries, sweets chocolate, etc. I go around and ask people for things that they may have no more use for, and know that the faces of my residents will light up when they win a small price. I buy little toys for them to give to their grandchildren...
I have always thought that my bingo sessions would make for great viewing of the television. We have some that are blind, some that are deaf, some who start arguing every time. We have fighting over the prizes, it is so entertaining, and delightful for them....
I saw this on you tube, and this is just one elderly lady, imagine i have about twenty off them...
They shout out will it come, when i say the number 33, as the home is in rural territory and the 33 bus never shows up.
Don't you just love the elderly, I do especially when something as simple as bingo, the game i hate, brings them so much pleasure.....
Hope you find the video as funny as i did...... these are exactly the comments i hear times by twenty some, aw but they so warm my heart....

Very funny clip, and I know what you mean my Mum had a stroke and went into a care home for a while, she kicked she screamed I'm not going in there! ten minutes later she was in the swing of it and playing bingo and sashaying to the music from her wheel chair! thanks Nell

Good for you Poetlorraine, we've often talked about volunteering for an old age home around our house but I haven't done that since I was a kid. I remember all those people had a lot of little things to share! Funny article, nice work!

Old people are so cool PL, they get a kick out of the most mundane stuff and they are usually fun to be around. Although my voice is usually worn out whenever I return from my grandpa's house. Great hub by the way

Poetlorraine, You are right about BINGO for Seniors. As part of the the Seniors Therapy in the nursing home; I called and monitored B I N G O as a part of their recreational therapy. It is excellent for their memory, visual and mental skills, hand and eye coordination... It really means so much to them it really gave them hope and a sense of purpose! You are really doing them a wonderful service, Thank you for sharing, Blessings!
