A Recap of the Interview with Sophia C. Simmons

Find Love Again is the title of Sophia C. Simmons first book. Although it is a work of fiction it draws heavily from her life experiences. It was a great pleasure interviewing her on the Wonderful Women and the Internet Plus.

Our interview centered on Love, Passion, and what people can do about Domestic Violence. The statics she cited were frightening. Death by mate is one of the leading causes of death for women in America.

It was refreshing to hear that abuse was limited to just women, that there were men who where being abused also. And I brought up the point that a lot same sex couples go through the same challenges and violent situations but are rarely discussed.

What was also good about the interview is that we talked about what can friends and family members do to help. Lots of time the women, because of shame, fear, or guilt try to hide the situation from the outside world. Often time they will make excuses for their partners behavior.

I was grateful she shared the story about a woman's coworker who took the time and concern to note on a calendar blotter when the woman came into work with bruises. When the woman was finally ready to seek help, the co-workers blotter helped to serve as evidence.

One of the problems that is occurring in the cases is the women is being portrayed as a lying manipulator who is just being vindictive. While some women may fit that category, it does a great disservice to those who don't fall into that category and truly a being victimize.

During the interview I made several references to a radio interview I heard on WBAI where they were talking about Restraining Orders. On that show they had mentioned that in Criminal Cases the woman is at a disadvantage because the Prosecutors pursue the crime as one against the State and woman becomes incidental. On the Civil side women are increasing being marginalized and mis-characterized as was stated earlier.

But, the best thing that person can do in those situations if they have a friend or family member who is being abused is try to be patient and supporting. To document the dates and times of incidents would be extremely helpful for when the person being abused wakes up. Most importantly to pray for that persons deliverence.
