The best way to know what it is like to be a Finance Writer is to interview one

While researching for my finding a freelance writing job as a Freelance-Finance-Writer hub on hubpages, I found information on the net, looked up websites and read journals and periodicals to come up with a helpful informative hub about finance writing. One of the perks of my job is that I get to compile data and write reports, its fun and I like researching various topics especially new ones. Sometimes it can take days and weeks to get everything just right.

So I am excited to say that during my adventure of writing on this topic of Finance writing I had the pleasure of meeting Triplet+Mom, you guessed it she is one of the hubbers here on Hubpages. It just so happens she read my hub on becoming a Freelance Finance Writer and she left me a comment in reference to her being a Financial Writer, so I could not pass up the opportunity to seek a interview with her. What better way to find out what it is really like than to find out from someone who is doing it already as a career.

So sit back relax and enjoy:

To start out in the interview I am sure many of you are curious to know how Triplet Mom got her start in Finance.

Q: How did you get your start, and what do you like most about your job?

A: To understand my start I have to go back a bit. In college I originally went for a bachelor’s degree in accounting but did not want to take early classes so I decided to switch to sociology because really I am a people person. Straight out of college I got a job in accounting (even with my sociology degree) with a small CPA firm. I learned a great deal of accounting but when I could no longer move up in the company I made my move to the phone company. In telecommunications I quickly got into the finance department and moved up until I became a senior finance analyst. As a finance analyst I was analyzing how the company was spending money and I found a numerical error after a few days I figured out where the error was made and how it was made. My boss was away at the time and asked me to explain it to him in an email. Not only did I explain the problem but I gave a solution and other background relating to the situation. It just so happened that at the time they were looking for a finance writer and my boss used that email to get me that position.

What I like most about finance writing is being able to combine my two loves; writing and finance. I also enjoy being able to study on different subjects within finance especially those topics that I am not well versed and need to learn more about.

Triplet Mom brings up a good point, the economy can play a big role in what types of topics are in demand for freelance writing assignments.

Q: What is the most requested articles you write for clients?

A: That is a hard question to answer because there is not just one. I think that when there is a crisis such as is going on right now with the economy then there are more requests around that topic, same goes for the housing market. The requests are truly a reflection of what is going on in the world and in addition if you are writing for the company you work for then you are going to be writing about the concepts that are important or specific to that company. For example I was working for a telecommunications company in a department that focused on Women and Minority Owned Businesses so I would write about those specific businesses that our company was working with as well as factors that affected those businesses. Because clients can be in different industries their requests are going to reflect the needs of that specific industry.

In any profession when it comes to salaries, it can be high, medium or low. The same is true in the Finance writing profession. So as you are aware the next question is about what Fiance Writers can earn:

Q: How much money can you really make as a writer for the finance industry?

A: As a writer in the finance industry the pay is dependent on the writer’s ability and knowledge. Good finance writer’s can make up to $75,000 a year. Those that are just starting out can expect much less than that. The average is probably about $45,000 a year. And again this depends on a great deal of things like the writer’s knowledge and ability and whether the writer is an employee of the company that they write for.

For those of us who are interested in starting a career in the Finance industry as a freelance writer,Triplet mom has some helpful advice for us:

Q: What advice would you give someone who is interested in starting a career as a finance writer?

A: The advice that I would give is to have a strong love and/or knowledge of both writing and finance; it sounds silly and simple but it is very true. If you are not interested in either then you will not be successful as a finance writer. In addition I would suggest having a wide variety of interests within the finance realm; banking, money, housing and trends to name a few. Finance writers write about a wide variety of topics under the financial umbrella, so a love of numbers is truly important and significant.

As a note there are no set qualifications for finance writers although it is expected that a finance writer will have a bachelor’s degree in finance, economics or related field and a master’s degree is not necessary but can be helpful. In addition having experience in accounting, finance or related fields are also very helpful. Different employers look for different criteria for their finance writers, some are more focused on the writing ability and others on the topics.
