The First Year.

The Golden Retriever growth at different stages could be so irregular that you might get panicky. There’s really nothing to bother about as this is normal with this breed and other breeds of dog. Nevertheless, it is important you apply much care particularly at the delicate stage of the dog’s life.

One of the breeds of dog that are widely sought after is the golden retriever. The reason for the popularity of this breed of dog is obviously because of the different purposes it serves. Some people go for golden retriever for hunting purpose; others prefer to use it as a show dog, while another loves it best as a family pet.

Whatever be the purpose for which you seek a golden retriever for, it will be quite fun and educative to know the golden retriever growth sequence.

Immediately after birth: the tender puppy struggles to work, staggering and falling at intervals as it passes through the stage of learning how to walk. Then few weeks after, the puppy has gained stability and firmness while walking.

Five months later: four or five months after, the furred puppy has amazingly progressed into a young dog. At this golden retriever growth stage, the tail and legs of the golden retriever puppy looks very long that they appear like a mismatch on its torso; it’s really a funny look. Within this period also, the nose of this special breed grows out and the ears tend to be lowering to the floor; the dog might look detestable but not to worry, it will soon gain an adorable look. The irregularity in golden retriever growth is normal; this irregularity in growth is also applicable to other breeds of dogs. You will even notice that at a stage, the golden retriever’s front legs appear to be shorter than the hind’s and then it normalizes again.

The golden retriever growth seems to be on its peak in the second quarter of its life. At this point, the joints and bones of the puppy become vulnerable to wound. Please ensure that anything that will exert much pressure on the dog is avoided; such things as long walk, abrupt stop while running should not come in play. If the dog must be allowed to come down the stairs, it must be done with the assistance of a leash.

Here’s the golden retriever growth chart reflecting the weights at different stages:

Week 7 8-10

Week 9 10-14

Week 12 15-17

Week 16 25-26

12 months (male) 65-70

Remember not all dogs grow at the same rate, so you can't always go by a growth chart for puppies. Some puppies are slow growers, whereas others may have early growth spurts and slow their growth as they age.

Most medium sized dogs, Golden Retrievers included, actually reach full growth by 12-18 months, not two years.
