How to Make Icing

Making icing for cake decoration is a huge part in making cakes. Cake decorating can be an enjoyable hobby or a part of your small business. In the beginning you’ll have to stick around some simple models, but in no time you can advance to complicated and very nice cake decoration. For icing decoration you’ll need icing decorator bags and tips. You can find those in almost any hobby shop or online shop. Let’s start with basics, a simple recipe consists of

  • Confectioners’ sugar 1 bag
  • Shortening                  1 cup
  • Almond extract           1 teaspoon.

Put all the components in the mixer and combine it on low speed. After 1 minute on low speed, start the high speed for three minutes. If you think the icing is too sick, add some water, but just a little, as long as you can not decorate with a thin icing.

It is highly not recommended to put butter instead of shortening. Don’t use liquid food coloring, as it will make the icing thin. Colored paste is a much better choice. It is best to spread the icing using a long knife, as we need it smooth. Heat the knife by deeping it into a very hot water and run the blade over the rough areas of icing with a light hand.
