What Outdoor Rugs Used To Be

Once upon a time, and not really that long ago the term "indoor outdoor rug" referred to a dry piece of shedding fabric that resembled AstroTurf or something that the Pittsburgh Steelers played football on. One thing was for certain, it didn't look like anything that you would put in your house to decorate with. An old styled outdoor patio rug was for function only and did not add anything aesthetically pleasing to your outdoor decor either.

Today, with more and more people using their patios, decks and outdoor landscape designs as extensions of their indoor lifestyle, the backyard has become a place to do more than just store a grill. Backyards are now treated just like any other room of the house. With the idea of "outdoor rooms" came the desire for stylish higher quality pieces of furniture, Which brings us to the improvement of the outdoor rug over their older predecessors. Not only are they pleasing to the eye but the material that they are made of (polypropylene) make them water, mold, rot, and UV resistant.  Rugs have become a part of the look and design as much as other outdoor furniture

Outdoor Rug Materials

Polypropylene is a man made petroleum based synthetic fiber that is very strong, holds its colors well and is resistant to most stains thus making it very easy to clean when you buy this rugged  when it is made in a tightly looped form. But because it is petroleum based these rugs have a tendency to hold oil and grease stains more. So if you are going to buy a polypropylene fabric rug make sure that it is manufactured in a tightly looped form. Other types of material that make good outdoor area rugs are nylon and man-made silk which are more appropriate for indoor use and tend to last a bit longer than polypropylene

The Necessity Of Outdoor Rugs

If you have high quality indoor rugs such as expensive Persian or Oriental wool area rugs it is important to keep them clean and with as little foot traffic as possible.

Outdoor rugs can help you keep your indoor flooring or carpet reasonably clean especially if your indoor decor is light in color and you have a hard time keeping people from tracking in dirt and mud from outside. Are you one of the many people that insist that visitors remove their shoes when they are in the house? An easier way would be to have an outdoor rug before your guest and family enter into the home

Choosing The Right Indoor Outdoor Area Rug For Your Needs

While color and shape of the rug that you will ultimately choose is important, your first consideration before buying an outdoor rug is the amount of space that you want to cover. There is a quantity of rugs with beautiful designs that will well in a multitude of situations. All you need to do is come up with the measurements that you need then you can focus on the rug that fits.

With measurements in hand your next consideration is to consider the look that you are going after. Be flexible and find something that can become the focal point of you outdoor living space. There is a wide range of rugs to choose from square , rectangle and circular rug as well as large twelve foot rolls. Look for something that conveys your style and the color and design that you like. Many interior designers try to use an indoor carpet to tie in all of the elements of the entire room large or small, the same concept can be applied to the outdoor room as well

There was a time when the distinction between an indoor and a outdoor area rug was very clear. Old outdoor rugs simply did not have the elegance and style that their indoor cousins had. Today that gap is a lot closer and outdoor area rugs offer almost as much beauty as the indoors with the added strength to withstand the element outside. Now you can  complete you outside room design with good indoor outdoor rugs
