Freelance Writer Jobs, Gigs, and Opportunities
65Entry Level Freelance opportunities for beginning writers
is what most people want to know about. Getting started is the hard part. Need to get some experience? Getting writing gigs can be really competitive. So if your unpublished and inexperienced novice writer then read this!
One place you may have not considered before is Comic Books, yes you can be a freelance comic book writer. Start by finding an aspiring artist on the internet, put together an original comic, publish it yourself in black and white then send copies to diamondcomics to see if they would be willing to distribute it for you. Comic book editors want to see that you have a demonstrated ability to tell a story.
Another place which I think is absolutely fun is Travel Writing, (if you like to travel and eat then http://www.vezeo.com/is paying $25 an article. Daily newspapers have travel sections, the easiest for beginning writers to break into. If you like to write articles on museums, amusement parks, gardens, historical houses, shopping malls, wineries and other things to do on the weekends, (Las Vegas, San Diego and San Francisco are my favorites) Some editors may pay for your travel expenses.
Now if you would like to make a high hourly wage off the bat, try Resume Writing. All you need to get started is some resume templates for format and organization style. You can create resume's on your computer with Adobe InDesign. To get clients run a classified ad with your phone number, offer resume preparation services and charge $100 each or more depending on if you are writing one for a student or a executive. It should only take you no more than two hours to complete each resume. So your looking at $50 an hour....not bad. Now if you really want to be creative offer business writing (reports, letters, proposals) services to the clients who get hired from the resume.

Ghostwriters is someone who writes books and materials for other people. The ghostwriter does the actual writing, but the material is published under the client, they take credit as the author. So if you like being behind the scenes this would work well for you. Professionals, businesses or individuals who want to write and publish a book but don't want to do the work themselves will be in desperate need of your skills.
Some of you may want to write for magazines, big consumer magazines can be tough for beginners. Business magazines or Trade Journals need you to write and provide content for their pages. They distribute to a specialized audience. Trade editors need you to tell how one company solved a particular problem and what product they used to solve it with and what the results where or you may do brief profiles of products or companies in a particular area.
Are you familiar with a certain industry? Plastics Manufacturing, Electrical Engineering, Fiber-optics, Building insulation or Pool and Spa construction. Security Systems and Safety Products is always a good industry to write about.
Alternative Weekly Newspapers are free and every city usually has one. They usually hire local town reporters to cover local news or events going on in the area. This would be a great way for you to meet people, cover stories and get a byline in a newspaper to use later when you want to go for National Newspapers.

Nightcats, thats a great gig, writing for community newspapers, I found that these kind of papers like local residents who can report on what is going on in the local area.
You're great, thanks for the Info...
Lynne
Your great, Lynne... smile
Never even considered comic books as a form of formal training for a wanna-be writer, but it makes sense. Comic book writing requires one to write VERY tight. That's an excellent skill to have when writing for the web. I'd be interested in hearing more about comic book writing. Plan on doing another hub detailing it more? Bet you'll get lots of visitors from comic books geeks. :)
Thanks dm for the great idea, I think I will do just that.
Great post would like to hear more on the comic books.
nancy interesting that you should mention that one, I have been preparing material for a hub that further talks about how to become a comic writer. Thanks.

Good advice here. I've been a free lance writer since 1996. I'd never have considered comic books, though. I got my start by writing free lance articles for my community newspaper. They paid $60, which I thought was a huge amount of cash at the time!
