Potty Training Kittens
74Our dear Kitten "Bibbs" Comes to Live with us
Calico Bibbs as a Young Lady cat
Why does a kitten use the bathroom anywhere other than his litter box?
Is there something I can do?
Yes there is something you can do for kitty. In the first placekittens are babies and need to be trained the same as human babies. They are probably taken away from the mother who would naturally train them to be clean and to do their duty in an appropriate place (such as the litter box).
- First be sure the litter box is clean and kept in an accessable place for the kitten to easily reach. If they cannot get into it, they will have to go on the floor. Do not move it around so they always go to the same spot to do potty duty.
- Next you need to introduce kittens to the litter box by physically taking them to it several times each day. This is the same as you would do with a human baby to get them used to potty training and where it is accomplished.
- If kitten poops in corner and it is scoopable, pick it up with a stiff piece of paper cardboard and take kitten and poo to the litter box for demo purposes. Dig a hole with scoop, place poo in hole, cover it with scoop or let kitty try covering it , all needs your kitten looking on por taking part.
- You may think this cruel but my mother always rubbed their nose in the pee. Immediately she would take kitten to the litter box scoulding as in "bad kitty", "bad kitty".
- It will take about three days of this hands on training and try to catch them when the accidents happen. Cats are basically very clean animals and sure don't like their noses rubed in it. It seems cruel, but it works quickly to get compliance. Actually this is not cruel compared to having a person who kicks, and physically harms them. You are only hurting their pride in being clean long enough to get them to scratch in the litter and use that for their potty duty.
Over the years our home has been host to more cats than I can count. Mother cats had many kittens that we had to find homes for and always seemed to manage to do that. My wife was always concerned that they would be treated well as they would be if we had room to keep them all. We loved all of our cats and they showed their love in return.

Rest in Peace Mrs Bibbs, 'Furdy'
The many Cats we have had
LOVED ONES DEPARTED
Today Karen and I do not have a cat. The last one really hurt to lose as she had lived with us fifteen years.
We were her pets. She was not our pet.
Meow means 'open the door please'. Oh, good person now 'Meow' meaning I want back in. Sometimes she would do this two or three times to see if we would respond. We got smart in the summer and left a baseball bat in the back screen door so Mrs Cat could come and go as she pleased. This gave us some reprieve at the inner kitchen door. By the way Karen called her Mrs. Bibbs (she had a brown bibb with a white spot in the middle of it). She was otherwise a dark smokey black calico. Her hair was not fluffy like a Pursian but thick and shiny. I was her man pet and I called her Furry to begin with, which became Furdy as time went on.
MRS BIBBS is burried out under our apple tree where she spent many a happy day in summer. 'Rest in peace 'FURDY'
Many other cats have been with us and loved but none as long as Mrs Bibbs.
A list of their names follows:
Super Browny, Buttons, Gypsy, Arty (loved this little guy)
Biggy, Smokey, Doc, Doober, Bob
Littly, Cleo, Vagabond, Kabit (Manx), Cloe
Muffin, Mommer Cat, Blacky
Mr. Dunk..
There were others but I cannot now remember all of their names. One thing for sure was that they were loved in our home and knew that.
Blacky, the last on my list was only at our home a couple of months and when I was in the garden hoeing. A neighbour dog came by to pay a visit. Blacky stood up between me and the dog as if to say. "Come any closer big animal and I will tear your eyes out" A show of affection for his new master that I have never ever forgotten. Blacky was just dumped off to fend for himself at the feed store where I worked. I couldn't let him starve so I brought him home. He lived with us two years and then his bravery got him killed as he stood up to a big husky dog. Rest in Peace 'BLACKY' He too is buried out under our apple tree. I have planted a flower garden with ceramic turtle, frogs. and thick perennials that the cats liked to hide in on hot days of summer.
Jan 19th and I am adding "Mr Dunk" to the list of our cats. We asked the neighbours to come over and feed our cat "Mr Dunk" by the back door that was left open to the garage with a ball bat. They agreed and away we went on holidays for two weeks. Upon returning our neighbour came and with sad face said "I have sad news, your kitty went away the first day I was over and hasn't returned" . The next day we were outside cleaning up the lawn when that familiar Meeow came louder and louder as "Mr Dunk" galloped to get his long absent hugs. He was indeed an awesome cat and would have nothing to do with any neighbour feeding him, so he went into the cornfield and became wild for two weeks until we returned home. This same thing happened the following year as well. A cat loves a good master and family.
Be kind to your kitten but firm in your training till they get the hang of digging in the litter to do their duty. They will soon come to it on their own and always use it. It will then be your job to change the litter at least every two weeks to keep it from smelling. You will get into the routine for this just as the kitten does to use it.
As with a new baby kitten, your life will change completely to be in tune with their requirements. If you love your kitty, that change will be beautiful for you too.
The very same is true when you bring a new born human baby home. Your life is changed forever in a most beautiful way. You have a new baby to love and take care of and some day potty train. If this has never happened for you yet, I pray God will grant it for you.
No kittens with me in my daylily gardens today, but I keep the flower beds in their memory. For all good kittys out there, I wish a pet master that loves you.

Thanks James 0608, I will indeed add "Mr Dunk" as he was an awesome cat. As for another kitty, you will have to convince mom first.

As I read this 'tribute' to some very wonderful pets over the years, our two cats are running around my living room playing. Now, how can one ever remember 'all' of those great cats that we had over the years? I sure cannot remember all of them but I do have to wonder how did you ever forget to mention the 'cat the went on vacations when we did'. You remember Mr. Dunk don't you dad? We would leave on vacations and Mr. Dunk would go away until the day after we came home. No matter how long we were away. Mr. Dunk was such an awsome friend. And yes, I sure remember Arty and many others. Thanks for the memories my friends and thanks for reminding me of all of them dad. So, maybe it's time for another kitty.
