The mystery of the mona lisa
51History
The painting, belonging to Leonardo da Vinci, dating from the
period between 1503 and 1506. It is an oil on poplar board 77 x 53 cm,
whose technique used was the "sfumato", a procedure typical of Leonardo
da Vinci in the overlapping layers of paint very thin and delicate,
achieving an effect that vaguely vaporous contours giving a sensation
of blurring.
In addition, the artist would play with perspective, and drawing a
horizon higher than another, what makes the Mona Lisa showing higher if
viewed from the right side.
The work is owned by the French State since the sixteenth century and can be seen in the Louvre Museum in Paris.
But despite the many technical and historical information you have
about the Mona Lisa, the truth is you never have gotten to know a
number of things: who is this mysterious woman and, above all, why she
smiles.
According to information gathered, processed and even historical
studies, the next most popular argument is that this woman was the wife
of Francesco Bartolomeo del Giocondo (hence "La Gioconda"), whose name
was Lisa Gherardini.
This theory would be supported in his book "Mona Lisa, naive
woman" the Italian historian Giuseppe Pallanti, convinced that it was
Gherardini, a lady of Florence would have married a second time with
Francesco. This would have been widowed and would have had five
children with Lisa offspring. According to studies, would have married
when Lisa was 16 and had posed for Leonardo when he was 24 or 25.
The historian would have called "donna naive" because it was a pet name that her husband used.
Other hypotheses suggest that it was a courtesan, or an
unrealistic model imagined by the artist. Even, it has been said that
it was Leonardo's own.
However, the initial thesis seems the most convincing. Pallanti
gives evidence of that. Thus, it would confirm the theories discussed
by the Italian writer Giorgio Vasari in "Lives of the finest painters,
sculptors, architects and Italians", published in 1550 and would be
expanded in 1568.
Once this is finalized, the question is what do you laugh in Mona Lisa?
To Yale University in the United States we come to explain the
research conducted there. They say the lady smiles because he is
expecting a child. One reason is that, as the symptom of a pregnant
woman, Lisa's hands are swollen. Moreover, the way they rest on the
stomach gives the illusion of protection for your baby.
It is said that Leonardo painted it by getting an effect if you
look directly where the smile, it disappears and reappears only when
you notice any other part of the picture.
Either way, it has never come to know the true state of mind of
the Mona Lisa. What lies behind this mysterious and baffling smile that
seems to look as mischievous, protective, sad, calm or even malevolent.
So rest myths and legends referring to the work, especially when
on 21 August 1911 he was stolen from the Louvre Museum. The author of
such a theft would Vincenzo Perugia, who managed to get the police in
December that year. After touring a number of cities like Florence,
Rome and Milan, again, safe and sound, the Louvre in 1914.
He is currently protected by a very powerful security and
protection systems. Likewise, it also ensured the survival of thousands
of unknowns unanswered. Unknowns that always adorn the fame of the work.
