Web 2.0: Does it Exist?

With the growing popularity of Web 2.0, there are more discussions about what is it is. Besides trying to define what it is, there are debates about whether it is all hype or whether it exists or not. By reading this material on Hubpages, you are a part of Web 2.0. Like any new technolgy, there are those who are using it to scam people which give it a bad name. There are consultants who claim to have been doing Web 2.0 work for years. Since it has not existed for years, such claims are fallacious. Some claim that web 2.0 is more about a mindset, approach or way of thinking. It is more than that. The interactive web is what web 2.0 deals with. This new interacting changes the old ways of doing business. It requires new methods and along with those new methids are new mistakes.

Web 2.0 Logos

This is our list of the top 10 mistakes people make with Web 2.0

1. Ignoring it. Treating Web 2.0 like a fad that will eventually fade will lose you potential business. If you are wanting to do business on the Web, then ignoring it will cost you money. Although there was the dot.com bust, web 2.0 has shown more stabilitly and longevity than its predecessors.

2. Joining everything. Although some cultures are joiners, when a person joins every social media and web 2.0 site, they will not be able to do the interacting needed to make it work for them. FInd your favorite site or sites and work them. Working a few sites will generate better results than only maintaining a prescense on a plethora of sites. Although similar to getting caught up in an Amway sales presentation, it is important to be cautios about how many sites you 'jump' into.

3. Joining a site and not using it. By joining a Web 2.0 site and never using it, you are wasting your efforts. Such actions are like putting a pole in the water, walking away and hoping a fish is going to bite. Web 2.0 requires your attention in working the site. You will need to participate. You will need to make posts and respond to those posting to you. You will need to add some value to the site in order for it to be a value to you.

4. Hide you identity. People want to know about people. With web 2.0 you are interacting with other people. The avatars and strange illustrations may be fun for a short while, but in the long run, people like to interact with other people. They want to know who they are interacting with. When a person hides their identity, there are reductions in interaction.

5. Go overboard with applications. When social networking site pages are overloaded with applications, people avoid the sites. The applications are like clutter in someone's home. They distract and take up space. They may be cute, but for many visitors, they are seen as an electronic eyesore.

6. Go overboard with 'friends'. After joining, some people make everyone that contacts them friends. This will get you many contacts, even some you do not want. By having large numbers, the likelihood of quality contacts diminishes.

7. Copy & Paste everything. When sites have nothing original, people become bored. People want stimulation, they want something new. When the material is all recycled (unless recycled in a new way), they quickly grow tired of it. If you must use old recylced material, do something to make it fresh. Like any object or website, a lack of freshness makes it dull and boring.

8. Rely on one source of income. With Web 2.0 there are many sources of potential revenue. Attempting to rely on one source will be disappointing. This was seen with google AdSense and AdWords. Many early responders jumped onto this revenue streams. When the early responders told other how to do it, those people often put all their hopes in one approach or one stream of income, which ended up being disappointed when google changed their way of doing things. Revenue generating techniques are frequently changed. In order to profit, you will need to have several sources and stay aware of any changes those revenue sources make.

9. Thinking that your site or favorite social media site is the only one out there. When staying with one site, people miss the innovations occurring in other areas of the web. When you become attached to one site, then when they make changes or are sold, you will find yourself upset. The very nature of Web 2.0 is about change and adjusting to changes.

10. Ignoring bookmarks. When bookmarks and tags are not used, the ability to use the power of the Web is not utilized. When tags and bookmarks are used effectively it helps you and the other people who are interested in the same topics that you are interested in.
