10 Common Problems Students Face During College
87
College can be a daunting and fun time. It's can also be a stressful time, especially now, in our broken economy which leads use to our first problem.
1. Money. The "starving student" is more that just an adage, it's an actual fact.Students are strapped for cash and have to find ways to finance their education, housing, and nutrition. I knew of a guy who lived in someone's basement and whose three course meal consisted of dry cereal. Forget poverty level, many students live below poverty level unless their parents are rich or they're former child stars.
2. Courses. It isn't always that easy to sign up for classes. There are these annoying little deadlines which students have to register for a classes. If they're past these deadlines they have to be placed on a waiting list but there's no guarantee they'll be admitted to the class. Often times that leaves an annoying little block of free time because you couldn't register for that one class. This means you have to take the class during the Summer or have to pack it on top of other classes you have to take the following semester (if it's offered the following semester).
3. Time to work and study. Not only do students have to pinch pennies in order to survive, many have to work. This means cramming in a lot of studying within a short period of time and still maintaining a desirable G.P.A while working part-time. The students who have jobs have no alternative than have less then five hours of sleep during the week, if that. This is particularily the case during finals. Don't be fooled, this is harder than the real world.
4. Student/professor relationships. Not much is conveyed in the media or movies about the excessive arrogance of professors. While not all professors are arrogant and this flaw is not necessarily a bad thing, if it affects a student's professional relationship with the professor or their grades, then it is. Unfortunately, professors have this little thing called "tenure" which enables them to get a way with murder without repercussions. Students are not very protected (ombudsman is a joke). I knew of many cases in my former university that ended going all the way to the supreme court (in fact, it was written about in the college newspaper).
5. Deadlines. I know I mentioned this in number three but I want to expand on it because it's such an important problem in college life. At the beginning of the semester we are given syllabuses which lists the deadlines for projects, homework, and exam dates (which is a deadline if you quantify time). Students are often scrambling during the semester to finish projects and study at the same time in order to turn everything in by the date listed in the syllabus while passing exams with a desirable grade. Unless a family member died, you have some sort of relevant illness that a licenced doctor is treating, or you're being shipped to Iraq or Afghanistan to serve in the armed forces, you have meet the deadlines.
6. Group work. Group work is not as nice as it sounds. Sometimes students have great groups where everyone pitches in and do a solid job on the project. Other times you're stuck with one person who is either lazy and doesn't do their share of the work or wants to control everything though they might not have the best judgement. The end result could be a poor grade for the group as whole.
7. Politics. Whether it pertains to professors or students, student life is very political. A good salesperson or politician would do well in this environment because they know what to say and do. Kissing a** and knowing the hierarchtical system helps.
8. Majors. We all know unemployment is extremely high right now. If you leave college with the wrong degree, you might find it hard to find a job or you might be forced to turn to business or education for jobs. On the other hand, some students switch majors like they switch lovers. If you're a student, make up your mind and choose wisely
9. Drugs and alcohol. In college they're everywhere. Students are now adults and are taking full advantage of that fact. Unfortunately, it could have a negative impact on their studies, social life, and health. Students have died because of drug overdoses or alcohol poisoning.
10. Sexual promiscuity. You only need to think of the advertisements for "Girls Gone Wild" to know what I mean. Students deal with a host of problems caused by sexual promiscuity from unwanted pregnancies to STDs. Fortunately, colleges take great pains to prevent potential problems by educating students on preventative matters.

True, I miss all the free movies. At least in my college we watched movies before they came in the theatres. Plus I love discussing novels and philosophy in depth and discovering new bits of information and theories not presented to us in high school. Then, of course, there's extra-curricular activities after school. However, the question that I answered was "What are 10 common problems students face during college?"
That is good to hear that you also enjoyed the university life. Some of the things you mentioned are the lessons we learn while we are young and students. I didn't want to comment on this hub earlier since I felt you had bad experiences in University. But now after seeing this comment I hope you write a hub about "What I love about University life" to give the other side of your story.
Created a request for you: http://hubpages.com/request/9630/best?new
Good Idea, CW! I'll do that hub after I finally publish a couple of others.
yah...it's true like me ...my parents like to me to be a teacher...but really like is to be a computer secretary...but i guess i have no choice because i have no money to support my needs in school...thats why, i get that course...thaks...i only share my expiriences...thanks again...
Thanks Gladys. Yes, yours is a prime example of the student crisis here in the U.S. However, a degree will benefit you more in the long run so I urge you to get a degree when you can. It's a small annoyance in the grand-scheme of things. Thanks for commenting.
Just stopping by to say good Hub.

Just dropping by to say thank you! Of course! Negativity sells!
Thanks to student loans and grants, my two children and myself are all attending university, but we will all graduate with a great deal of debt and most likely not a lot of opportunities to use our shiny new degrees. But fortunatly the experience has been good for all of us. No problems yet, she said with her fingers crossed. Thanks for the informative hub.
Thanks for you comments lafenty.Debt may be worrisome but we will always have some type of debt. Right now the economy is weak so opportunities aren't bountiful but there are opportunities out there. And if there are no opportunities then we can always create them. I'd say the experience is good for all students but college mimics the real world as you know-there are professors and students who you'll get along with then there will be clashes because some personalities don't mesh and other more personal reasons. Even in ivy league schools (I know of a case where a professor in an ivy league institution sued her students). However, a university education broadens ones scope.
wow
i use to be a hubber but admen did not like my blogs so they stop me from posting my blog here so now i am a blogger a i fine it to be much better than this place this place dose not give you the freedom to blog what you want. anyway nice blog if you have the time come see my blog at http://booyakamix.blogspot.com/
Good list... I think it's safe to say that all of these also may compound into emotional issues, which could be connected to drugs and alcohol and other things you've mentioned. It's difficult for students to be away from home and the things they are used to; people who would protect students before are likely no longer there to save the day. It's a time for growing.
Thanks for the comment glassvisage. Good points...students learn really fast how to survive in the dog eat dog world when they leave their sheltered lives behind and attend universities.
Still, from my experience a university can become rather sheltering in itself...but it's closer to the real world.
I think you made a lot of excellent points, but you missed the point about being homesick. For a lot of students this is their first time away from family and friends for such a long period. It might not be immediate but it can certainly take it's toll.
True. I should have mentioned it but it slipped my mind Twin.
So true, I used to stay up all night in college due to stress alone!
Some tricks to get over it that I've learned are: http://stress-help-guide.com/student-stress-makes-
Yes, studentstress, sorry for the late response. Stress can overwhelm the college student-I, in particular, had an insane amount of stress do to family and work obligations as well. Never once did it occur to me to quit, though, as some students do. It translates well in the real world.
Excellent points! I survived college by following a few of those steps and they helped a lot. I miss college because you are SO RIGHT about majoring in fields that won't make you money!! I had this happen to me! However, it was a blessing in disguise b/c I am starting my own buisness. Being prepared when you leave college is the key, if not you will stuck in someone's classroom substitute teaching!!
Thanks for commenting GainCurves. You have some excellent points. However, I must also add that people should pursue their passions, after all, what is life if you just survive.
from politics to alcohols .... everything affected me in my college life ....
Sexy Jonty, thanks for the comment. Yes, good point, everything affects the college experience not just college itself. Sometimes it's hard keeping your personal life separate from your professional life.
I like the way your brain thinks, makes me feel alive listening to what your thinking, very cool...Keep it up ...PS Now I Know Why I bookmarked your page ;-) ...Hope you are doing well,
I'm doing great. Yes, I answered the request without sugarcoating it. Hopefully some people are not offended by it.
I have professors in my family so I'm not exactly in awe of higher academia. I love learning though.
