The other day my husband and I were trying to figure out what could we do for the day with the kids. We didn't want to spend a lot of money. But we wanted to have a really good time with them.

So we set-up a challenge for the day. We decided to see if we could find 10 things to do that Saturday without spending a dime. Not easy in this day and age. The rules were everything we did had to be free. The things we did had to be engaging for the kids. Not just sit around and watch tv or read a book or play on the computer. Although very fine not just for our challenge.

We did it and I wanted to share with you our 10 free things we did on Saturday!

1. Took the kids to a farm to look at the animals, pumpkins etc... Many farms are free and open this time around for you to view.

2. Went to a playground in a park.

3. Went to our downtown mainstreet and walked thru some very cool old stores. Like the hardware store that has been open since 1882. They loved the old stuff in there.

4. Went to a pet shop. Now this pet shop was an older one with all types of animals. They had turtles outside and a dog that ran around the store. Birds, lizards, kittens, fish, hermit crabs, mice, etc... This was quite an adventure for them.

5. We visited the library downtown. We sat in on a reader for 20 minutes. The kids were truly capitivated.

6. We went to an old plantation house that had free tours. They loved walking thru the home and seeing all of the old timey stuff. Very cool for all of us.

7. We went to the state park, free, and walked a trail down by the lake. We stopped to check out all the animals, plants and crystals on the trail.

8. We stopped at a lacrosse game, local kids, to watch them play. The kids had never seen a lacrosse game so this was super exciting for them.

9. We went to the farmers market to check out all the fresh vegetables, fruit, flowers, pottery etc... Free music and lots of fun!

10. Last, but not least, we had a barbeque on the back porch to end our day of fun. We ate outside, built a fire in the pit, roasted marshmallows and talked about all the things we did that day!

By 9pm the kids were exhausted and sleeping quietly in their beds.

By 9:10 Tom and I were too!
