To limit a list to just ten great resources to improve your writing skills is a real challenge. There is a wealth of books, magazines, ebooks, newsletters, ezines, blogs, and websites out there geared to the betterment of writing skills, writing careers, and starting out fresh in the field.

This hub has a collection touching on many of these resources, as well as some news items that are worth checking out. As far as a top ten list goes, here are my personal top picks that have landed me where I am today (nine years after starting my freelance writing career):

  1. Make a Real Living as a Freelance Writer, by Jenna Glatzer
  2. Writers Digest Magazine
  3. The Writer Magazine
  4. The Well-Fed Writer, by Peter Bowerman
  5. Make Your Creative Dreams Real, by SARK
  6. The Artist's Way, by Julia Cameron
  7. The latest edition of The Writer's Market (the online version is GREAT, too)
  8. Magazine Article Writing, Writers Digest Books
  9. The Renegade Writer, by Formichelli and Burrell
  10. Deb Ng's FreelanceWritingGigs.com Blog

This list is, by far, not exhaustive. There are so many other great resources out there, which is why the decision to include additional links, books, and products was made. There are also a number of writing-related communities and forums you do not want to miss, particularly those on absolutewrite.com and writersweekly.com.

If it is workshops and classes you are after, here is a list to check out:

  1. Writers Online Workshops
  2. Writing Classes
  3. P&E: Writing Workshops
  4. Writers Retreat Workshop
  5. 10 Universities Offering Free Writing Courses Online
  6. Creative Writing Courses
  7. Writing Courses Online
  8. Lifewriting Classes
  9. MediaBistro.com Courses and Seminars
  10. Writing Workshops, Classes & Seminars For Creative Writers

As you can see, there are a lot of resources available if you are willing to do some hunting and clicking. If you are the type who enjoys hard copy research in order to improve your writing skills, then consider printing out these materials and creating a "resource manual" or handbook of all the resources geared to your particular interests, weaknesses, and areas needing improvement.

Futher Researching Resources

Do you actively seek out new resourcs to improve your writing skills?

  • Yes, I love learning new skills.
  • No, I think it is a waste of time.
