Not everyone had the chance in their life time to taste some of these extremely delicious exotic fruits, which most have not even heard of, especially the younger. Not only they are highly nutritious, full of vitamins, their taste is among the greatest when it comes to a luxurious dessert. I have collected a list of the 10 most delicious exotic fruits which anyone should try, either you are on vacation, or even in your home town, these fruits can be found in almost any fruit store.

Dragon Fruit

1. Dragon Fruit

Also known as pitaya, pitahaya, or strawberry fruit this fruit is one of the greatest among all exotic fruits with an absoluely delicious sweet taste.It is a fruit of several cactus species,with a soft and creamy pulp and a very delicate taste. The dragon fruit can weigh anywhere from 150 to 600 grams and the flesh, which is usually to be eaten raw. A great fact about the dragon fruit is that they can be harvested 5 to 8 times a year, including all seasons. Pitayas are rich in fiber, vitamins and minerals, notably phosphorus and calcium.

2. African Cucumber

Native to Kalahari Desert, Africa, now present in in California and New Zealand, this fruit is a delicatessen. The African cucumber, also known as the horned melon or melano (local) is a fruit that can be best described as a large cucumber with spines, it`s even grown similarly to cucumbers. This plant is sensitive to cold and may be only grown during the warm seasons. It`s highly used for preparing various cock-tails and smoothies.

Kumquat fruit closely resembles that of the orange, but it`s slightly smaller and different shaped, most species have an ovale shaped. They have originated in China in the 12th century and are highly cultivated in Japan, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, Japan, the Middle East, Europe (Corfu, Greece), and the southern United States as well. They are those small oranges you may have seen in the super-markets, slightly expensive. Kumquats are frequently eaten raw, but also used in cock-tails and non-alcohol fruit juice, due to their pleasant sweet and sour taste. Some people eat the entire fruit some use to peel them.

The fruit is covered in a hard husk, which actually makes these little wonders interesting and apart from normal non-exotic fruits, they have an unique taste, in despite of their horrible smell which makes them forbidden in hotels and public transportation in South-East Asia. But still the unique taste of the durian is all people go for, when savouring and 'Ice Durian Breaker' cock-tail.

Rambutan is closely related to some other tropical exotic-fruits such as Lychee and Longan, and native to Southeast Asia. The plant the fruit actually grows on is an evergreen tree, growing to a height of approximately 10 - 20 m. There are several species of rambutan but the most common one has a leathery skin, red colored, some species can also be orange or light yellow, but these are. The yellow specie is also called "the wild rambutan", it is a little smaller than the usual red variety. Rambutans have a very nice acidic taste when mature, but they are mildly poisonous when raw, it`s recommended that they are cooked if raw. They are highly used as fresh fruits, for their highly nutritious pulp, and not only, they are also used in the soap industry as well.

Jackfruit trees are one of the largest fruit trees in the world. Jackfruit is native to southeastern India, also very common in some parts of Asia and Australia. The pulp, as this is the only edible part, has a very similar taste to pineapple, actually it`s a bit milder than pineapple. Many worldwide cuisines, use jackfruit in several dishes, especially the ones with chicken meat or turkey. Crispy Fruit Chips are also produced from sweet jackfruits, more popular in Asia.

Starfruit, is one of the most common exotic-fruits in the world, native to Indonesia, India and Sri Lanka, it is also called carambola. It tastes pretty much like pineapple, and has a very crunchy, a bit acidulate (due to a high quantity of vitamin C) and sweet taste. Starfruit is highly used in bars for decorating cocktails.

8. Mangosteen

Native to the Sunda Islands, mangonsteen is another fruit thatt grows from an evergreen tree. It has an unusual color for an exotic fruit, as you can see, a very dark purple, this fruit has a citrus like, sour and sweet taste much like lemon with a hint of a peach. It is very often eaten raw and it`s also used for medical purposes in various diseases, in older ages, but for the young as well. This fruit is often used in vodka and gin based cock-tails for taste and decoration.

Native to South America it`s grown in several tropical places around the world such as India, New Zealand, Brazil, etc. What people most like about the passion fruit is it`s interior orange colored interior which is very juicy and full of seeds. There are actually two species of Passion fruit: Golden Passion Fruit or ( the marucaya) and the dark purple (gulupa) which a lot of people tend to like a lot more.They also differ in size, the gulupa is a bit smaller just about the same size as a medium sized plum, the gulupa has recently been reported as poisonous, so it`s a lot safer to ask for a Golden Passion Fruit, to prepare your favorite cock-tail or why not just eat raw and take advantage of all it`s highly nutritious and full of vitamins pulp.

Native to southern China, found in regions like Taiwan and India as well. Lychees are also coming from an evergreen tree, as we noticed most of these exotic fruits are harvested up to 12 times a year, including this one. Lychees are covered in a crusty red rind, known for it`s high vitamin C, an and higly nutritious, a person can go up to 24 hours without food just by eating 20 Lychees. Lychees are spread worldwide canned or refrigerated (in plastic bags), they are very often used in the sweet`s industry and bars for decorating drinks.

Delicious... I grew up drinking passion fruit juice, I loved it. It was so cheap and delicious we always had a jar of fresly made passion fruit juice in the fridge. For special ocassions, the juice was mixed with Pisco for a refreshing cocktail.

I like Lychees too, the fresh ones, canned ones are not the same at all :( I can easily sit and eat a whole kilo of Lychees at once !
