Delaware has tons of history and many places throughout the state are said to be home to spooky fantoms and unexplained phenomena. As Halloween approaches, there are tons of options to check out* in the oh so spooky First State.

*Remember, trespassing isn't cool, doesn't make friends, and could get you in serious trouble. Get permission first, or go on a guided tour.

10. Cooches Bridge in Newark is said to be haunted by a British soldier who lost his head during Revolutionary War skirmish. On some evenings, his headless body is seen wandering along the road near the bridge.

9. The Addy Sea Inn in Bethany is said to be home to some spooky paranormal activity with rooms 1, 6, and 11 being the most active.

8. Old Newcastle is filled with historic homes, quaint shops, and is in general a lovely little town on the scenic Delaware River. It is also home to two once adjoined, and still haunted homes. The Amstel House and the David Finney Inn were once connected by a secret passageway and both homes to this day are known to have some spooky activity including phantom footsteps and rearranging furniture.

7. Belmont Hall in Smyrna is one of the most historic buildings in the state. During the American Revolution a guard was fatally shot on "the Captain's Walk" while guarding the building. His spirit is said to remain in the building and legend has it that his blood is still evident where he collapsed, and then later died, on the second floor.

6. The Deer Park Tavern in Newark has a checkered past. It was once a place where slaves were sold, it was a seminary, a bar/hotel, and a brothel before ultimately becoming a college and local hangout in Newark. Staff is uneasy at night, and many closing managers do not like to be in the building alone. Bar stools have been captured by security cameras flying off the bar, noises have been heard in the stair wells, and many individuals get the creepy sensation that someone is behind them even though they know they are alone.

5. Camp Arrowhead is a de-centralized, residential summer camp affiliated with the Episcopal Diocese of Delaware. There are lots of spooky campfire stories about various areas around camp, but the most interesting story surrounds the Rec Hall. This building is used to store all the camping gear and recreational items staffers and campers use throughout the summer. It was once a dance hall in Lewes, Delaware and was floated across Rehoboth Bay to where it stands now. Staffers have reported seeing every light on in the Rec Hall, long after everyone has gone to bed. The sounds of music and laughter can be heard, even though the building is empty.

4. Memorial Hall is now home to the English Department at the Univeristy of Delaware, but it was originally erected as Delaware's World War I memorial and served as UD's library until 1963. Professors and students reported bizarre occurences as the building was renovated and evenutally re-dedicated in 1999.

3. The Dickinson Mansion is supposedly haunted by John Dickinson's ghost. He was dubbed the "pen of the American Revolution" and it is reported that disembodied writing sounds can be heard in the area that was once his study, and his spirit has been seen wandering the grounds.

2. Patty Cannon is a notorious figure in Delaware history and folklore. She and her gang kidnapped individuals, and re-sold them into slavery. She was known to escape law enforcement by hopping back and forth across state lines. She was bold, brazen, cruel, and one nasty broad. She was eventually indicted for four murders in 1829, and supposedly committed suicide by ingesting poison while in prison. An industrious official beheaded her for posterity's sake and her skull resides in the Dover Public Library to this day. It is kept in a hatbox.

1. Fort Delaware was used as a Civil War prison for Confederate soldiers, and is one of the most actively haunted locations in Delaware. Situated on Pea Patch Island, the only way to get there is via ferry. It is now part of the Delaware State Park system, and there are ghost tours available through October. A female apparition was captured on camera walking through a wall in the Officer's Kitchen. It is believed it is the same woman who has been known to address people by name, angrily telling them to "get out!" TAPS researchers captured shocking activity when they filmed their Ghost Hunters Halloween Special last October. It is impossible to go and not feel as if some serious stuff happened there and maybe is about to happen. It is definitely a place worth visiting for its historical significance as well as for the potential to get the scare of a lifetime.
