Even the most easy-going person hates stuff

  1. Waiting This has got to be my number one pet hate.I'm one of those annoying people who hate to be late, so I always get everywhere early then get annoyed when I have to wait.  Take last week's visit to the gynaecologist, a fantastic example.  I arrived fifteen minutes early, so I could complete the form for a new patient.  The receptionist handed me a small plastic container and told me to pee.  I duly found the toilet, managed to direct my stream of urine into the bottle and not over my hands which was a good start.  However, when I wanted to give my urine sample to the receptionist, she refused to take it, and said I needed to hang onto it for the doctor as he'd want to see it.  Well, needless to say the doctor was running late.  Very late.  Some woman had gone into emergency labour and he had to rush to the labour ward in the hospital next door to check on her.  How inconsiderate of the woman, knowing that some of us had made appointments weeks in advance.  Especially, as I now had to wait in the waiting room desperately clutching my plastic container filled with urine that was quickly cooling in my hand.  I couldn't read magazines while I waited, as I didn't feel I could put my urine sample on the coffee table in the waiting lounge and force everybody to look at it.  I hate waiting.
  2. Finding out you're wrong  Don't you hate it when people imagine you might enjoy something, like a movie, and go on and on about it, until you are so convinced you'll hate it, then when you get there you find out they were right.  You did enjoy it.  Take this weekend when my youngest daughter forced me to see harry Twatter and the Half-cocked Prince.  I've always prided myself on not jumping onto the Harry Twatter Bandwagon.  I never read the books or watched the movies.  In fact, I hate fantasy, magic stuff and science fiction.  Imagine my disgust when I enjoyed the movie so much, that I found myself commenting that I couldn't wait for the next, and my daughter looks at me with a smug expresssion on her face and says, "Told you so!"  Last week, she went to see Transformers and I said no, hate that kind of movie, will rather see Knowing with Nicholas Cage.  My daughter told me I'd hate it, and I disagreed.  I should have checked first to see what the movie was about.  I hate horror, science fiction and doomsday movies.  They scare me shitless and give me nightmares.  I do have an overactive imagination.  So, imagine my horror to find that Knowing was a horror/science fiction/doomsday kind of movie.  My daughter was right once again.  Now I can't stop looking at the sun waiting to see if a maxi-flare is shooting out, and my eyes are really starting to get sore from looking directly at the sun.
  3. Cucumbers and pips  Cucumbers, watermelons and things with pips.  The last few years I've started to eat tomatoes, even though I know your body doesn't digest the pips, and if you use human manure in your garden as fertiliser, then tomato plants start growing everywhere.  My grandmother told me that if you swallow a pip, you get a tree growing inside you.  I no longer believe that, but still can't bring myself to eat pips.  And nuts.  Except chicken and cashew nuts and salted peanuts on a bar counter when I'm busy consuming alcohol at a rapid pace.  So, make me a cucumber and nut salad and I'll hate you forever!
  4. Lack of time  I'm one of those multi-taskers, doing so many things at once, I always seem to run out of time.  Today, I'm supposed to be packing the last few things to airfreight to my new residence in Tanzania, working out an assessment tool lecture and examples to give a group of new teachers in the township, making a website for my mother's NGO, writing a funding proposal for her, sorting through stuff I need to put in storage, and writing my book.  So little time to do so much.  And, I'm supposed to be on holiday but no time for holiday amusements.  So, what am I doing?  Writing this article which is not on my list of things to do and dreaming about whether or not I can fit in a lunch of delicious calamari before the lecture this afternoon.
  5. No money  Don't you hate it when there's so much you want to do and can't because there is the problem of not having the money to do it.  I hate it when a lack of finances hamstrings my enjoyment of life.  I've seen so many things I'd love to buy and can't.  I hate it when I have to have priorities and stick to them.  But, watch this space, one day I'll win the lottery!
  6. Naughty children  As a teacher I have to spend my working hours with children.  That is my choice and I do enjoy it.  However, when I go out somewhere, I do not enjoy being surrounded by badly behaved children who infringe on my personal space and hamper my enjoyment of the moment.  Especially, when their parents turn a blind eye and let them carry on like hooligans, running everwhere, making a noise and generally being a bloody nuisance.  If you can't control your child, put them on a leash when you take them out in public!
  7. Aggressive people  I am a conflict-phobe.  I do not cope well with aggressive angry people who feel they have a point to make.  Look at me as if you are going to shout and I retreat into my personal happy place in my mind, and I tune out.  further shouting and gesticulating will not reach me when I'm in my happy place.  When you have calmed down sufficiently, then talk to me.  Control freak people and domineering dominating type people - I don't do them either.  In a meeting, if I keep getting shouted down, or spoken down to by some condescending patronising prat, I'll retreat to my happy place, nodmy head to pretend I'm paying attention, when I am actually planning the next chapter of my book.  I use avoidance when faced with intimidation.
  8. Know-it-alls  There is nothing worse than a know-it-all who thinks they know how something works, but doesn't have a clue.  Sometimes, I might remain silent to watch know-it-alls fail and make fools of themselves.  It does give me a perverse pleasure.  This was something I came across quite a lot in China.  You are trying to explain directions to someone, and the keep saying, "I know," when they have no idea what you're talking about.  So when they say, "I know," I keep quiet, and let them do it all wrong or get lost.
  9. Poverty  I hate feeling helpless when I am surrounded by people who are living in poverty.  There's so much I'd like to do for them to relieve them of their burdens and stress.  But I can't do enough.  Whatever you do is a drop in the ocean.  Every leak you plug, another five leaks spring out.  The utopia of a world where nobody is wanting is an ideal that would be awesome.  Unfortunately, there are always the 'haves' and the 'have-nots.'  I wish I could do more for the 'have-nots.'  But then sometimes when you help them, they become greedy and want more and more until they rip the ring out of the donkey, so that you yourself become a victim.
  10. Health problems  I hate feeling sick or having health issues.  This whole holiday has been spent getting various medical check-ups.  It's a waste of time and money, but unfortunately, something that has to be done.  But it's not only my health problems I hate, I hate it that people who are already suffering because they are 'have-nots' are often hit by chronic health issues as well.  Why kick someone when they are down?  They already have no money to buy food or pay for a decent place to stay, so why make them sick they can't work or afford to buy medication?

Cindy -- I sooo agree with most of these! We must be on the same wavelength. Badly behaved children in public should be rounded up and carted off somewhere distant and sound-proofed, and not released until their parents take a course in common courtesy, child-rearing, and public etiquette.

FP, yes, leave for Tanzania next week! So much to do until then! I think most moms say that about pips, but the kids don't believe them. problem is, poor gullible me believed it for years!

Thanks CC, have been soooo busy, not much time for hubbing. Have been trying to get technology in place and staff training done for my mom before I leave again.

Teresa, on my last trip away in China, when I went to see the shaolin monks, I could have strangled some of those parents, they way they let their kids behave. It's a lack of respect for others, is what it is!

hi Cindy,

Since I've been accused of being one of those instant gratification people, I'd have to agree and say waiting doesn't work for me. Lack of money is a huge one, hate it.

Other things that I hate are rudeness, condescending people, mistreatment of people or animals, things that don't work, micro-management, traffic jams, and liver. That's all I can think of at the moment.

Trish, I guess I'm also a little instant gratificationish. If the TV remote doesn't work properly, I just want to fling it. Hate it when the computer doesn't work the way it's supposed to either. in fact, I hate technology when it has hiccups!

Queenie, I'm debating whether or not I feel lucky enough to hit the casino tomorrow!

Dori, yeah had quite a hectic few weeks and wanted to work on a hub I started, but no time, so thought of this hate hub.

Hi Cindy, Love this Hub! Tricia (the other patricia) probably only hates about 5 things, poverty being one of them, because she is a very tolerant person.

Pat (now typing) has an extremely long list of things to hate. Agree with all of yours, and add: something bad happens and I cannot think of somebody else to blame. Example: parking/unparking in a hurry, and bump your car into a lamp post. Bad enough to have a little dent in the car - but far far worse that it is a really stupid accident and clearly one's own fault.

Looking forward to reading about Tanzania.

Gypsy, domineering people make my blood boil. All secretly of course! Don't want to cause conflict!

2P's, yeah I agree, it is awful when you do something stupid and there's no-one else to blame! Like me now. went out for that calamari, lathered it in garlic and now nobody will talk to me in case I open my mouth in reply and breathe garlic over them. nobody to blame but myself.

Thanks TM, am sure your kids are well-behaved when they go out though, not like the other apprentice thugs on the loose!

Janetta, other people's spoilt brat children, allowed to run riot and cause havoc, grrrrrrrr!

Lafenty, the lack of money is driving me scatty at the moment, as there's sooooo much I want to buy to take with me!

Alekhouse! we are definitely on the same page! Do those kinds of movies also give you nightmares? I think it's because we're highly creative!

Oh yes I agree I detest waiting, I get soooo impatient, even with shopping trolleys that are in my way. What an entertaining Hub, CindyVine. Thoroughly enjoyable. If you were in India, you would have to get over the unruly children bit. They are all to common here, and since you can't lick 'em, you may as well join 'em.

Enjoy your stay in Tanzania. I went to Arusha once from Nairobi by road. The views of Mount Kilimanjaro are phenomenal though I believe the snow has reduced a lot. Good luck.

cindyvine profile image

cindyvine  says:

Violet, yes, my daughter loves proving me wrong, and I have to remind myself that slapping a smug expression off a face is wrong.

Blonde, maybe you should try and see if your tongue stud can enhance your whistle and change the pitch a bit? I once saw someone who's tongue stud hole got infected, and their tongue swelled to a huge big black thing. Nasty stuff!

May, it was horrible having to hold my pee sample as everybody who arrived looked at me funny as I had nowhere to hise it, so I was forced to give them a sick grin which hurt my cheeks.

Raven, do the chefs always throw out the pips? Never noticed that before. Maybe their mother's also told them the story about pips, or maybe there are many people like me who don't eat pips.

Sabu, I am going to be based at Moshi which is only 70km from Arusha and I'll be looking at Mount Kili every day. Yes, I have heard that the snow caps on the mountain have shrunk a lot!

Jaspal profile image

Jaspal  says:

Nice hub Cindy .... I can relate with most of your list. But not at all with the one about pips. Love sweet juicy watermelons. Of course, the ones with lesser pips are even better, but a few seeds won't keep me away from the fruit in the hut muggy weather which we are now suffering in North India.

Nuts again are always great. Even the docs recommend walnut and almond. But the best, as you conceded are the salted peanuts at the bar when chilled drinks are being quaffed down!

Re: Waiting. I'm not even a time-conscious person and this is still a Number 1 pet peeve for me. The gynecologist's office is an excellent example. For me, it's waiting naked for no less than 45 minutes in a stone cold room. (The johnny doesn't count as it's only thin paper.) I've thought of walking out, but it would be weeks before I could reschedule an appointment, only to find myself in the same situation, waiting and shivering naked in the cold for another 45 minutes or more. I comfort myself with the realization that if I were in an emergency situation (ER), I would have to wait twice as long.

My own pet peeve is grocery and convenience stores. There's no such thing as a 'quick trip to the store' these days, thanks mostly to the salespeople, from teenaged girls to middle-age women, blathering away cluelessly to each other and turning your simple shopping trip into your own personal hell. I've found this to be less of a problem with the male cashiers, unless of course they're being hounded by a female co-worker, which often happens. I am also baffled by their need to constantly re-shelve the stock in different aisles, forcing you to renavigate your once-familiar store as you would a blind labyrinth.

Re: Finding out you're wrong. I usually go with my gut. What looks good is good, and what looks stupid is stupid. But I have walked out on two recently, and demanded my money back on one of them. Perhaps I was being too optimistic.

'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,' (from 2005) is an exception. Looked like it would be ridiculous, but was actually done well and very funny. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommended it to you, as I'm sure you would appreciate Willy Wonka's disgust toward children, which is even more pronounced than in the original.

Thanks for the post. Glad to know it's not just me.

Waiting, not having money to buy the things you desire rather than need is always a bummer. Today we had a farewell lunch for me at a very expensive seafood restaurant on the Cape Town Waterfront! Blondepoet, the prawns were stunning! My one brother brought along his daughter and her friend and they were so naughty! Running around and screaming. They were happy, but oh my God annoying! Of course, my brother who has never stopped being the hippie/free spirit/weed-smoker kind of guy, did nothing to stop them. Just said, "Chill, my sis, chill!"
