It's literally make or break time and it's vital that you take your time to ensure that you get many years of use out of your rc car.
During the break-in process your engine may appear to malfunction (showing problems such as stalling) but don't give up and keep using the throttle on and off as smoothly as possible. Remember have patience and it will repay you many times over.
Note: Always follow the manufacturers recommended break in procedure in addition to these tips.
In addition use the following tips to get the best performance:
- Replace the glow plug (may be required during break-in, definitely needed after break-in).
- Keep the engine cool (Remove the car body during break-in).
- Set maximum engine speed (without making the car moving) - use the idle screw.
- Start the engine with a rich mixture (look for blue white smoke).
- If you don't have smoke (or very little) then the engine is not running rich enough.
- After warm up the engine will run leaner so you may need to adjust the mixture screw.
- Continuously check the engine temperature using a head temperature gauge.
- Or use water to check temperature - 1 drop should not boil away instantly 3-5 seconds is OK.
- Correct break-in takes about 4 tanks of fuel.
- After each tank full shut off the engine and allow to cool for 10 minutes.
What to look for during break-in
Running TOO Rich
- More and more smoke.
- Difficult to Idle the engine.
- Glow plugs get dirty continuously.
If this happens then lean the high-speed mixture setting

- Popping noise when slowing down.
- Idle speed surges or slows to nearly stalling.
- Engine halts and glow plug wire burnt.
