10 Ways to Get More Out of Twitter
71Understanding Twitter
Get More From Twitter
If you like using Twitter, the microblogging social networking tool, check out some of the new and free applications that can add extras and enhance your Twitter account. If you're not on Twitter yet, the video to the right is so helpful. I love these Common Craft videos, which explain the Web in a simple way.
1. Twitterific
View your tweets, and your friends' tweets, in a small, easy-to-see interface that can be displayed on your desktop and permits you to continue to work on other things. One of the most popular is Twitterific, designed for Macs. You can also install it for use on your iPhone and iPod Touch.
2. Tweetr
Tweetr is a similar tool to Twitterific, and can be installed on both PCs and Macs. You're able to see all the activity on your Twitter account without having to constantly log in to your account or move away from your tasks to check.
3. Twhirl
Twhirl is another desktop tool that allows you to see your Twitter activity in a small window while you work. Twhirl will also let you shorten long URLs, cross-post your updates with social media sites Pownce and Jaiku, and search tweets using Twitter Search and TweetScan.
4. Twitterwhere
If you're looking for Twitter friends based on geography, you can use TwitterWhere, which provides users with geographic maps showing where your friends are from. TwitterWhere also lets you enter a location and a radius, then create feeds of all the tweets within that geographic area.
5. Twubble
Twubble searches through your friends lists, much like Facebook and LinkedIn do, and finds other people you might want to follow. It's your choice whether you want to follow them or not --Twubble just makes the searching and matching easy as pie.
6. Shareaholic
This Firefox browser add-on allows you to share, bookmark and e-mail web pages to Twitter quickly, without having to leave your browser. In addition, Shareaholic can submit any web page you're on to digg, del.icio.us, facebook, friendfeed, google bookmarks, kaboodle, magnolia, mixx, myspace, pownce, reddit, stumbleupon, and tumblr.
7. Phototwitter
Phototwitter is a lot of fun for vanity browsers. You can download Phototwitter, then use it to post a snapshot you've taken with your webcam, along with your accompanying text, on Twitter.
8. Twittersearch
Mine Twitter by using this application to search through the Twitter universe for interesting posts or new friends. Twittersearch also maps posts using Twittermap, so you can see where people are Twittering around the world.
9. Twitterfeed
Twitterfeed is a great add-on for bloggers.Using Twitterfeed, you can create a new user name and password specifically for your blog, then provide the ULR for your blog's RSS feed. Twitterfeed will check your blog's feed regularly and post new entries to Twitter.
10. Tweader
Anyone who uses Twitter a lot knows that it's impossible to follow conversation threads about the same topic. Tweader provides a way to track threaded conversations by permitting users to click on the Date and Time stamp of the tweet they want to follow, which brings them back to the threaded conversation.

Thanks, Julie-Ann!
Good hub my dear...sounds like "Facebook" no??? Thanks for all the good information...G-Ma :o) hugs
Right, G-Ma: Twitter is similar to Facebook, except you post much shorter updates on it. All your updates need to be 140 characters or less. But you can use it to post URLs of your latest articles or hubs, too. More exposure. Hope you're doing plenty of writing. I'll check out your latest...
Thanks for the comment!
Great hub about using twitter! Lots of awesome info here.
Excellent hub. I never knew about some of these applications, I'll have to try them out
Thanks, UW. I appreciate the comment. Glad to know anothert Twitter user. I'll look for you and follow you.
Jeremey: Thanks to you, too. I appreciate the comments, since I'm still a bit of a newbie.
That's a killer for twitter fan.
Thanks
Thanks, aperd! Try one of the apps out.
Nice input, I has experienced most of the applications and tools, now I`m just on Twhirl and TwitterSearch. My Twitter (broalex) already following you. :)Ohh I hate that intro video for twitter,I just hate it :)
Hey broalex:
I'll follow you back and thanks for the comment! My only disagreement -- I love those Common Craft videos. I've watched them all.
I enjoy using twhirl. Great post.
Write On!
Thanks, Write On!
I appreciate the comment.
What's Twitter? I am so ignorant of stuff out there on the net at times. Well you sound like you are having fun with it, I liked your hub, the video was informative so I am off to see what twitter looks like.
Thanks for your hub.
OK, Done. This will be interesting
Brainstormer: Have a great time with Twitter! Donb't forget to post your Hubs up there. You just copy nad paste the URL and then paste it into your Twitter update with a brief intro. If you follow me (NYLady) you can see how it's done. It will shorten your URL for you. Thanks for the comment!
ive added my email list on twitter and no one of my friends has it.... can it still be useful anyway?
yes, you can use it to post your blog posts, your hubs, anything you do online. Just copy and paste the URL into the update box. Anyone you follow or who follows you will get the updates. It's important to go to "find and follow" to find people you might be interested in following. Once you "follow" them, most people will follow you back. And voila -- you have an audience. Even if the audience is small, at least you will get more readers that way. I check on where my hits come from, and a bunch do come directly from my Twitter account. I also get great ideas from some of the Twitterers I follow, including The NY Times Tech blog, the Time magazine news blog, Barack Obama, etc. It's fun reading.
Good luck with it!
Thanks for the info! Great article
You're welcome!
I just started using Twitter and don't have time to play with it. You just saved me a lot of frustration! Thanks.
Hey MLM: Thanks for the comment and good luck with it!
tnaks for tweeting this I am still finding my way!
Thanks a lot. I love Tweeting and I always used to overlook a few messages that were meant for me. I have tried one and its working. :)
Youre' welcome, Lissie. Enjoy using Twitter.
Aana: You're welcome. Twitter is a great way to promote your hubs, among other things!
I've been curious about Twitter, but haven't looked into it yet because I'm still figuring out digg, StumbleUpon, and tip'd. I've gotten some good traffic from Stumble and tip'd, but it's short-lived.
Am bookmarking this hub for future reference. Thanks for the great info!
Thanks, EM. Definitely check out Twitter when you have free time. I use it to post links to my blog items and hubs. I do get some traffic from it, but it builds gradually along with your Twitter friends. Hope you're well and Happy Turkey Day!
I found you on Mighty moms page. I've been hearing about this Twitter for some time now. I find most of my treasures by mistake. I really enjoyed the video and explanation you gave of all the ways Twitter can be used. Thanks for the time you took to put this together for all of us. Welcome to the HUB.
Thanks, Denise. And I appreciate the welcome. Mighty Mom is one of my favorite writers here. I'll check out your hubs as well.
One important tip for using all these twitter tools is to distinguish what type of group you are following. These tools make it super-easy to manipulate the use of Twitter, so follow and participate in appropriate groups. Clearly establish your interest as casual and social interests or clearly identify your interests as business. Those two distinguished groups will appreciate your enhanced interaction using these tools in the appropriate context. Business groups will not follow and will unfollow people that use these tools to treat Twitter like a chat-room and vice-versa. I have 2 Twitter accounts - one for business and one for social interest and fun. These tools make handling 2 accounts better!
I agree with you and thanks for the comment! I use Twitter (one account) to promote my Web 2.0 business blog and another account to promote my articles for Examiner.com about Dancing with the Stars, of all things! They are distinctly different, let me tell you. Great advice.
Twitter is growing like a weed
It certainly is -- unbelievable growth. I do workshops about Web 2.0 tools and Twitter seems to be the last frontier for many people. The last thing they'll try. But once they're on, it can be addictive.
Concise, high quality, helpful Hub for someone new on Twitter. Gonna download Twitterific after I leave this comment.
Thanks, Reynolds Writing. Appreciate the comment!
Thanks! Some of the apps you mentioned I hadn't heard of yet.
Great twitter applications and very usefull when trying to figure what the heck is going on in the twitter world, thanks! Gary Rust
Thanks Kelsey and PVrust. Have fun with Twitter!
