The 10 Best Wii Games for Kids 5 to 8

Most parents have a love/hate relationship with video games. Yes, it keeps kids occupied for hours, but it also keeps them indoors and sedentary. If you have decided to let your kids have a Wii, you know that the interactivity of the Wii gets kids off the couch and moving.

When you have little ones, you have to be cautious of which games you buy. Some games can be incredibly violent and disturbing for young players. Others are just too difficult for young players to handle. There are plenty of fantastic games out there for young players if you know what you are looking for. Younger children respond well to games with brightly colored graphics that don’t have a lot of detail. Mini games also are popular with young kids, as there attention span isn’t quite what it will be in a few years time. One of the benefits of the Nintendo Wii platform is that there are heaps of games which have shorter style mini games within them that only last a few minutes.

A lot of young children struggle with the menus than they do the actual games, so when you first get the Wii you may need to spend a bit of time teaching them how to use the Wii remote. The less button pushing, the easier the game will be for them, so look for games that use motion sensing more than button pushing. There is nothing worse than a toddler throwing a Wii remote at the TV in a tantrum.

1. Wii Sports Resort

This one is a great introduction to the Wii remote for kids, and can often be found in a bundle with Wii Motion Plus. It’s easy to learn and great fun, everyone in the family can get involved. As the sports adjust in difficulty kids and parents can play together, but don’t be surprised if you five year old kicks your butt at Jet Skiing. Be careful, it’s addictive. Made up of mini games, you can try sky diving, basketball, and Frisbee all using the Wii remote. You use your own Mii’s in Wii Sports Resort.

2. Wii Music

Turn your Wii remote into a barge of musical instruments, from the drums to the piano. Wii Music is only limited by your imagination. Heaps of mini games for little ones, with some instruments being quite easy and other more difficult there is something for all ages.

3. Mario Kart

Bring out your competitive side with Mario Kart racing! Best enjoyed with the steering wheel accessory, into which the Wii remote sits. You can either play against each other in multi player mode, or for younger players, set to the time trial mode so they can learn the game before they start racing.

4. Rayman Raving Rabbids

This series of four games is great for kids. The original title is made up of seventy mini games, as well as story mode which plays like a regular game. In this game you must help Rayman escape the imprisonment of the Raving Rabbids. The game was originally designed with the Wii remote in mind and is easy to master, especially for little kids. The zany characters and easy to navigate graphics will make this a favorite with kids.

5. Cooking Mama: Cook Off

In this game players must face a series of mini games in which they must cook off the prepare the best dish. Each mini game is a step in cooking a dish, with anywhere from two to eight steps involved. Use the Wii remote to mimic the actions of cooking such as slicing, dicing and rolling.

6. Warioware : Smooth Moves

– This is great for learning to use the Wii remote. Made up of microgames, which only last between five and ten seconds, this game is great for kids. A microgame may ask a play to do something as simply as holding the Wii remote pointing at the TV, or against their nose. As the game progresses it becomes more difficult.

7. Disney Princess

Enchanted Story – This one may prove more popular with the girls than the boys. The popularity of the Disney Princess brand will see the girls make a beeline for this one in the shops. This one requires the remote as well as the nunchuck, but most kids can handle it after a bit of practice.

8. Cars

Just to be fair, here is one for the boys as well. Again, games that are based on popular movies and TV always are big sellers. The steering wheel accessory will get lots of use with this game. You can set it up on a certain mode so kids can freely drive around town and get used to the game.

9. Mario Party 8

The Mario Party games always prove a hit with the kids as well as the adults. This version for the Wii platform is no exception. It works a bit like a board game and is best enjoyed in multi player mode. As you all advance around the board you will face off over a series of mini games.

10. Active Life Outdoor Challenge

This one could be summarized as Wii Fit for the little kids. Best enjoyed by the younger kids in the age bracket, around five or six, with fun fitness focused mini games, such as the trampoline.
