10 ways to relax

How to chill out
I'm the most relaxed person you can meet. I'm so relaxed that I irritate some people; I need no yoga classes; I need no drinks or diversions or anything. If I was more chilled out, I would be an ice box! Here are ten quick ways you can relax when you are stressed. Real short term steps. After that, if you are not satisfied, and want to take the extreme step of becoming like me, read my next hub to learn my secrets.
The Ten Quick Ways
1. Smile
Just sit there and smile. Like a fool, yes, but a relaxed fool. We are Pavlov's dogs. We smile when we are happy, but we can cheat our psyches by smiling first and becoming lighter next. So smile. Widely.
2. Drink some water
This works for me. Maybe it's a soothing, flowing activity; maybe the water actually does something to the digestion or something; who cares? It works.
3. Breathe Deep
This, as you know, will destress you fast. When breathing in, imagine peace coming in and filling your being, and making you as light as a balloon, colour of your choice, but ideally no red. Green or blue maybe. When exhaling, or breathing out, imagine stress and problems leaving you.
4. Beauty Treatment 1
There's something soothing about letting somebody fiddle about with your hair and face. So take a trip to the salon or the hairdresser's. If you can afford the time and money, a massage or a steambath or both.
5. Beauty Treatment 2
Look at beautiful things. Sceneries, children, cute animals, sexy people. Visit hubs that are beautiful. Change your desktop image into a beautiful picture. Do a google image search on landscapes.
6. Sharpen a pencil
There are many such rhythmic activities which relax you fast. Er...yes, I know what you're thinking...that, too! Stroke your pet, brush your hair, dance, ride a bicycle, hop on to your treadmill. Mix it with some slow music if possible. Rhythm soothes the stressed out beast.
7. Water Treatment
Take a bath, never fails for me. Or swim, if you can. Or dance in the rain. Or stand under a waterfall, if you live close to one. No, not the Niagara.
8. Meditate
Meditating isn't always twisting your body into a fancy knot and mumbling things. Sit still, breathe rhythmic, think beautiful thoughts. No, drowning your neighbour in clear soup is not beautiful! Love your neighbour. Think beauty, love, peace...
9. Laugh
Best thing ever! Laugh out loud, and the world will think you're crazy. Let them! It will relax them too! That's social service you're doing! Read jokes on the web, or wherever. Read my other hubs; that will make me laugh, too! Thank you!
10. Play
Not a frag frag game on your computer. Unless you have murderous instincts towards your neighbours and want to let off steam. Then that's better than doing any constructive destruction.
I actually meant playing with a child or a pet. Have you noticed that children don't suffer from much stress till they are introduced to adult things like grades and stuff?
I have many more, but you get the drift, don't you? Let's look at some long term strategies. Next hub, please!

Ahhhhhh Kenny!! You and I live in parallel Universes!! Thank you so much for sharing this peacful and peace-filled Hub!! Perfect suggestions for the Holiday madness!! I LOVE your new photo!! You look like my favorite Omar Shariff to me!! Blessings to you and your family!! Earth Angel!!
And then the bath afterwards! Thank you, Dudley for sharing that view.
Omigod, Earth Angel! Omar Shariff? I always thought him very handsome! Heaps of blessings on you, angel of peace.
Thanks Kenny for these marvelous tips. This hub is really cool!
Hey, thanks, CTCV, nice of you!
Great advice Kenny - a list like yours is helpful because not everything works for everyone. For some reason, hot baths actually make me antsy.
Kenny! Great advice. I totally agree with everyone of your points...Now the waterfall might be a bit tricky, I can just see someone slipping and sliding on that algae covered rock.Boom, splash,gurgle,gurgle...no, not relaxing at all, sorry that won't work for me. Just trying to get a little smile into this comment.
Again great HUB
regards Zsuzsy
regards Zsuzsy
Livelonger, thank you! Yes, everything won't work for everyone. Hot baths work for me most of the time. Sometimes cold baths work, too, when the day is very hot!
Zsuzsy, only safe waterfalls! And thanks for the double regards!
Very good relaxing ideas. My husband always tells me to get up and have a shower when I cannot sleep. It works for him, but it wakes me up. Have to agree with the laughter idea. Should be more doing that and all the other things to of course very helpful suggestions. Great hub. I'm yawning now......
Delighted that I made you yawn, Eileen! Better to bore people than stress them up!
Kenny, I love love love this hub!! I keep reading your hubs and for some reason never thought to join your fan club; well I fixed that problem! Anyway, these tips are GREAT. Something as simple as smiling can seriously make you happy. Thanks for sharing.
And I am your fan, now, Helena! But thanks for reading my hubs all this while!
Yes, just lifting those muscles to a smile can create happiness!
Wow, thanks Kenny! It's important to know, too, that convincing yourself that you SHOULD feel sad or WILL feel sad in a certain situation will actually cause you to feel that way. So smile! It's easier to be happy than you might think.
Yes, and it also relaxes people around you. Unless you are unkindly laughing at them, of course!
Great tips, especially at this time of year. Thanks.
Hey Kenny, im like you and am very chilled 24-7 but for those who are not, these tips will help;) and if they need to smile. Your hubs will help definitely help:)
Your hubs are always worth reading and the smiling is very easy, whilst reading same
"If I was more chilled out, I would be an ice box!"
You and I are polar opposites, then, Kenny! (Get it?? See I was inspired by your pun hub!)
Great tips, and letting someone do your hair really can be relaxing!
Thanks, Peter, for finding it useful. It's a stressful time of year for you?
Thanks, Compu-smart for dropping in even
when you didn't need any tips!
Frank, i say the same things about your unique hubs.
They make me smile, think and sometimes feel sad: very moving writing.
Got it, though a bit late, Isabella, thanks for the pun!
A hair job is usually relaxing, but not if it's Mr Bean doing it! Then we can't afford to close our eyes!
I need to post this up where I can be reminded to breathe and smile ;-)
PS, did you know - Scientists have found that dehydration can provoke anxiety, because the weakening body is trying to protect itself - ie, if you were to get yourself into a "fight or flight" situation, you're at a level where you might not have enough strength to do so. Hence, the anxiety to keep you where it's safe. So apparently this is one reason why water relaxes you when you're stressed or anxious.
Thanks for that extra info, Daoine!
Take note, friends! Thank God I drink lots of water! Pots!
HI Kenny,
Good day!
I love you hub. Very nice tips. The first time I read it, it made me smile. Thanks for sharing this simple yet very effective relaxation techniques. I will be you fan.
Good day, Conch Paradise! And that's a great name by the way!
Thanks for amiling, and to make you smile a bit more, I became your fan, too!
4 and 7 especially. I love having my hair brushed and there isn't much in the world nicer. hot baths with aromatics too. wonderful stuff. 10 I do all the time (except for those pol tears), so there is that. :p
and as usual, your Hub was brilliantly written. :)
Hi Iðunn! Good day!
Not bad, you have these many options! Maybe I should add reading and writing poems to the list! Some of yours relaxed me. :)
Excellent hub. One more tip to relax for a huber - just rub your forehead after closing your eyes with mild pressure after continous staring at screen. Of course more useful with a smile
Great series - have you done a page combining "relaxing" with "controlling your man" while you "work at home"? ;)
Jenny
Oh, Prem, didn't see your comment till now, my mistake, and my apologies. That's a good suggestion, and yes, a smile would add to it! Thanks!
LOL! Jenny, delighted to know your name! I am sure women can do that kind of multitasking!
you really are good at relaxing and relaxing others. truth in advertising. this is a great hub.
Thank you, O great friend!
you know you look like a movie star in the pic on this page... hollywood used to do that in the 50s, I forget the name but there was one for it, but those face shots of the famous or hopefully soon to be. glamour shots. :)
Aw, wish I could blush, but will try. My son made me pose that way. I used it since I looked relaxed.
Yes, I can pretend to be glamourous and famous till Destiny is fooled!
they call that faking it until you make it.
dratz, now not remembering that other phrase for hollywood glamour shots is going to bother me all night. I hate it when that happens.
your son has a keen eye, but it didn't hurt that he had great raw material to work with. shall he become an artist too, do you think?
What word? Sepia? Vignette? Cheesecake?
He's an artist already, and thanks for that not so subtle compliment.
He has taken Visual Communication for his Bachelor's. Freshman now.
He also learns animation at another institute.
Two dreamers in the house!
sort of akin to "pin-ups" but either gender and hollywood specific. grrr.
yay for him :) how wonderful for you both, the shared talent and shared dreams and (I foresee) ever expanding success.
Hopefully, yes, expanding success. Now it's all balanced. Two dreamers and two streetsmart people in teh family. :)
that really worked out well for your family, then. :)
Is beefcake the word you hunt for?
I think dreamboat, something along those lines. I remember it from an old Haley Miills movie called "the parent trap" (very cute movie, by the way).
no beefcake to me is more like arnold schwarzenegger. you're more of a romantic passionate type, not a muscle-bound weight lifter. you look quite like the dreamer you are in that pic, almost like a poet. :p
anyway, I'm out for the night, you have a great day. :)
Good night, Iðunn! Was wondering why you were up so late.
No, of course I'm not beefcake, LOL I was so caught up in being a coseeker of the elusive word.
Almost a poet is good enough for a compliment for me. But one day... Good Night!
I laugh and smile all the time but I am so stressed sometimes. Great info.
http://hubpages.com/hub/Singorama-LessonsAnd you sing, too! Actually you should be the most relaxed person around! Thank you, Singing!
Very nice read, Kenny! My kids totally pick up on my stress, so I practice calming techniques most of the day. I love the simple "smile"...totally works. =) I can't wait to read more!
Hi Mom! That's the fastest trick in my quiver, too! Thank you!
good stuff kenny. Have you ever heard of Yog Nidra which is relaxing yourself completly at will? its a meditation technique where you shut down all the muscles in your bod (almost all) and from 20 minues of that is like 5 hours sleep. look into it might interest you or maybe I'll do a hub on it :-)
Yes, Stubbs. It's a spiritual thing for us here. But please do a hub on it if you can. I will link it to this.
I won't try it myself: if I am more relaxed, I would be dead! :D
Thanks -- I think 1), 9) & 10) are great suggestions.
Smile, laugh and play? Great combo, Ink, that's what I do mostly, too. Thanks!
Nice! I must tell you that I truly appreicate your tips... For whatever reason I find myself stressed to the max during (most) days, but I'm going to try your techiques. I can positively tell you that smiling works. Thanks!
Great tips there. Some of them are so basic, yet most people forget how relaxing they can be. Im surprised you said 'Sharpen a pencil', wow, can it get simpler than this??
I tried that, Rookie and it works. Actually, it's simpler to relax than to work oneself up.
Thank you!
These are great tips , Some of the things which i did not find here , but it applies for me are
- Make othes laugh
- Write poems
- Photography : if people want to see some then go to : http://flickr.com/photos/manish_chauhan/sets/72157
I am also known as the most coolest person in my friends circle ... i dont remember when i was irritated or i was angry ;)
Thanks, Manish for the extras! :)
Great hub! I find day dreaming about pleasant things infinitely relaxing. Trouble is I don't find enough time to do it as often as I want to. :D
I also find watering plants very relaxing.
You seem to be a naturally relaxed person, Muser.
Now I have daydreaming and watering plants to tell people, thank you. :)
I have to say out of all the articles that came up when I googled this topic, yours made the MOST sense! You have very good explanations to back up your ideas. thank you for brightening my day!
Delighted to have been of help, Christine! Thank you!
Kenny...HI HI miss you...are you doing well??? G-Ma :O) Hugs & Peace
Ah, G-Ma still loves me! Im fine, how are you? Will be active here in a month, just like before. Have to finish a spate of work. Then it will be old times again. :)
Miss you too, G-Ma. Hugs and kisses.
I believe the keyword to not getting enough relaxation would be quick. Although your 10 ways do seem easy. I think I will go drink some water.
Thank you, newsworthy!
Water is best, whether you drink it, or swim in it, or even get it out as sweat or tears. :)
I am really impressed. I do not have words to say after reading this hub. It has changed my mind totally. I am a bad temper guy now. Previously around 5 years ago, I was not. I made people laugh previously and now people try to make me laugh but fail because time has changed and my responsibilities have increased. They have increased so much that sometimes I feel a lot of burden on my shoulders and head. For 10 minutes when I was reading out this beautiful hub written by you, I thought my inner self which was myself 5 years back has come out and is asking me to distress and relax. Remember the way how you were. Thanks for doing such a good job writing out this hub. I am really really relaxed now and the credit goes to you.
And I am delighted and honoured. Thank you, Soni, for your kind words. If you really become again the happy person that you were, I will feel that writing this hub and others like this is worthwhile.
I have more responsibilities now, than before, but worrying about them will only increase them. So I smile and relax, then my responsibilities stop being burdens, and become useful lessons. All the best to you. :)
Thank you very much Mr. Wordsmith. I need the company of positive thinkers like you to bring back my inner self which was always humorous, positive, and full of energy. And I am already feeling a new leash of life inside me. I am highly motivated. Thanks for the motivation.
Then I welcome back the humorous, positive and energetic Soni. Cheers!
You have put it in a very simple way , hope all of them steps into your blog and read this article.
thanx and regds
lakshmi
Thank you Lakshmi for this visit! After Lakshmi visits, the hub will surely flourish! :)
It all makes sense but step 3 in the best,it's good read man!
Step 3 caught my attention especially, nice hub!
Thanks, Waren, for the kind words. Actually for a double comment! :)
That is a nice list of ways to relax. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you, Anamika!
thanks mr.wordsmith.thats very considerate of you to share your relaxing secrets to those of us who get caught up in work that we forget these bits that are necessities for longetivity. Thanks.
Oh, I share everything I know, that's how I am. You are right, Essy, in saying that relaxation is necessary for longevity. Thank you.
I love your hub! Nice job! Here's one you might enjoy: http://hubpages.com/hub/relaxation
Thank you Kimberly! One more for that link :)

Thanks Kenny for helping me learn how to relax. I have never noticed before how relaxing a wash and cut at the salon can be.
