# 10 ~~~ Parenthood

The Diarrhea Song

Parenthood ~ 1989

Ah, the Buckmans. You remember them don't you? There's Cowboy Gil (Steve Martin) and his wife Karen (Mary Steenburgen) who aren't above crashing the car in the name of love. Their 3 kids are Kevin (crybaby), Taylor (exorcist child) & Justin (our favorite) who likes smashing things with his head. Gil has two sisters. Helen Buckman (Dianne Wiest) who is trying to keep her kids (Martha Plimpton & Joaquin Phoenix) from having more sex than necessary while living under her roof, be it alone or in the company of that Tod (Keanu Reeves). Gil & Helen's baby sister is Susan (Harley Jane Kozak) who's marriage to Nathan (Rick Moranis) is in jeopardy over parental control of their emerging ninja-scientist daughter Patty. They also have a brother, Larry (Tom Hulce) who they don't see very often, unless he blows into town with a gambling debt and a son named Cool. Their father (Jason Robards) is in for the biggest lesson of all, though. Last but not least, let us not forget Grandma (Helen Shaw) because she's brilliant. Question: "If she's so brilliant then why is she sitting in our neighbors car?"

# 8 ~~~ Election

A Perfect Comedy

# 8, Isn't that kinda high?

The only way you could argue with this choice is if you never saw the film!

It is the standard by which all future comedies should aspire!

Election ~ 1999

Mr. McAllister tries to alter the course of Tracy Flick's destiny. End of Story.

Matthew Broderick takes an unflattering role for the greater good. Laughs. Reese Witherspoon proved right here that she was far more versatile than we had previously thought possible. You could have found some other actor to play Mr. McAllister I admit that. But there could only be one Tracy Flick. You will be both smitten by her and not soon after creeped out laughing watching her in Matthew Broderick's sex fantasy. You know what scene I'm talking about. Tammy Metzler's election speech before the entire school in the gymnasium is one if the funniest things I have ever seen. By the end, when the crowd cheers I have tears in my eyes. Every Time. Pick Flick!

# 7 ~~~ Airplane!

Ever See a Cockpit Like This?

  • Surely you can't be serious? I am serious and Don't Call Me Shirley.

  • You ever seen a grown man naked?

  • Oh stewardess, I speech jive!

  • Ted's drinking problem.

  • Johnny the gay office boy!

  • Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit..... -smokin', -drinkin', --amphetimines, and finally, -sniffin' glue!

  • Roger, Victor, Niner, Vector, Clearance, Clarence, Over?

Okay, now I KNOW you're a movie mastermind genius...You've got What About Bob? at Number 6 ... and, yeah!, Parenthood at #10! Thought maybe you might overlook that one since it has so many of the tenser/poignant moments of parenting. But such a great movie. And...why didn't Murray and Dreyfus go on to make more movies??? They could've been a modern team like Hope and Crosby or Martin and Lewis. Alas. At least we have this one! Can't wait to see top 5!!!

Great choices! I would add "The Blues Brothers" and "Dr. Strangelove."

first off, i need to see election. never even heard of it. parenthood was awesome and somebody obviously forgot to slap keanu reeves in the face w/ an electric ear cleaner. airplane is an absolute classic. and coming to america is awesome. not just eddie murphy doing multiple roles, but arsenio hall as well. my fav is def the marciano-louis battle, w/ eddie playin an old white dude. and soul glo.

but, what about bob? c'mon. just saw it again a couple months ago. very unimpressed. i remember liking it when i was a kid and it first came out. but, in all honesty i don't think it would make my top 200, nevermind the top 6. i think every movie on this list that i have seen is much funnier than what about bob!?

what ABOUT bob? don't c what the hype is about. i can think of 20 funnier movies not even on this list.

I can't even get through Bob's interview with Dreyfuss without laughing real hard. I love when he tries to name the people in the photos.

Blondie: my guess is that they didn't get along. Bill Murray doesn't have the best reputation as a team player. Oh well.

Billy: Hey, to each his own. I don't have any Adam Sandler, David Spade, Chris Farley, Mike Myers movies on MY list so i don't expect everyone to agree with me. Those films are just one-time throwaway laughs.

Ralph Deeds: I considered both of those films, actually but I'm using the Blues for a Hub on Musicals (it ranks very high) and as far as Dr. Strangelove goes, I never laugh out loud so...

It sounds like Dr. Strangelove is worth seeing....My last two films i saw that were lol, was , Little man as i have mentioned before and true lies.. I just don't have the time these days to watch any films and when i do, i find it hard to concentrate and keep up with dialogue as my mind wonders!! but when i do have some time , i sure know where to come to;)
