A vehicle is a film that is chosen especially to test the true 'star power' of a young new star. When it was time for Steve Carell to get his vehicle, he was ready. For you see there was quite a bit leading up to this moment.

Bruce Almighty gave us Evan Baxter who we enjoyed hating as Jim Carrey's nemesis news-anchor. Then he gave us the hysterical Brick Tamland in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy who allegedly 'killed a guy' during the rumble. But most of us already knew him from his days as a correspondent on "The Daily Show" 1999-2005 and later on "The Office" as Michael Gary Scott 2005-Present.

The 40-Year-Old Virgin ~ 2005

Meet Andy. He's a nice guy who works hard, rides a bike, watches Survivor and collects action figures. One night at a poker game with buds from work, he makes the mistake of revealing his ineptitude with the ladies and they are determined to help him score. Meet Trish. She just opened a "We Sell Your Stuff On ebay" store and is a hot grandma. When Andy meets Trish they quickly hit it off but decide not to 'hit it off'....for 20 dates. Andy's complete lack of knowledge is somehow believable and the scene with the drunk-driving girl who throws up on him is so so funny. Aquarius ending clinches it! A classic. And not just because it exposed the world to the 'Nasty Sanchez'.

John Patrick Shanley could really write Italians couldn't he? I used to love going to his plays during my high school/college years. Savage In Limbo, The Dreamer Examines His Pillow & my favorite, Italian American Reconciliation. In 2005, his play Doubt was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Moonstruck was his first major script and boom! he won the Academy Award for Writing Original Screenplay! His other comedic film was Joe Versus the Volcano starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan which is better than it's reputation suggests even though it did not make this list.

Moonstruck ~ 1987

Loretta Castorini is finally engaged to a man she doesn't love just like she planned, only problem is.....now she's is in love.....WITH HIS BROTHER! Authentic characters throughout who are all funny but in different ways. Johnny and Ronny Cammareri played perfectly by Danny Aiello and Nicolas Cage and would be the two stars of the movie if not for Olympia Dukakis and John Mahoney. Their little talk is why we love the movies. Just a little more exciting than real life.

Roddy Doyle is the writer behind the trilogy of films about the Rabbitte family. In 1987, director Alan Parker made The Commitments; about an Irish Soul band was the first book. The third book was The Van which was made into a film in 1996. But in between them both as a book and a film was The Snapper, about an unwanted pregnancy and a mystery baby-daddy.

The Snapper ~ 1993

The star of this film is Colm Meaney who a lot of people know as Chief O'Brien from Star Trek: Next Gen and later Deep Space Nine. His real talent is for comedy as evidenced by the Elvis-loving Da' in The Commitments. Wait until you see this one though. It is a full-out comedy about pregnancy unwanted and otherwise. Colm Meaney is the most wonderful father in the world in the face of unspeakable embarassment at the pub and everywhere else in life. He supports his daughter through thick and thin even though she won't even tell him who the father is. Shot entirely in Dublin, in all it's glory. When Sharon tells the girls the news they respond by getting completely pissed. That's Irish for drunk in case you're clueless about such things.

This is basically the same movie as # 98 on our list, Private Benjamin but I don't care. Biloxi Blues and even Full Metal Jacket also come to mind.The tagline for this comedy classic wasThe story of a man who wanted to keep the world safe for democracy...and meet girls.

Stripes ~ 1981

And so it went that John Winger and his band of misfits showed up at Basic Training at Fort Arnold under the instruction of the annoying Sgt. Hulka. When the Sgt is injured and the cadets are forced to finish their training on their own, they don't disappoint. Supporting roles for John Candy, Judge Reinhold and John Larroquette as well as long-time Murray collaborator Harold Ramis. All together now! BOOM CHUGGA LUGGA LUGGA!

We're No Angels ~ 1989

This funny contemplation on religion and freedom and more to the point, religious freedom. Sean Penn's character Jim: [as Father Brown, he is asked to give a speech to the town. He reads from a brochure stuck in his Bible that says "An Encounter with a Bear"] Have you ever felt alone, with no one to rely on? Danger on every hand, in a world fraught with danger, and when I looked into my pocket, what did I find? What did I find? [flips the brochure over - it's an ad for guns]

Jim: Nothing. There's nothing there. It's all in your head. Look, they can take the money from you. They can take the position from you. People turn their back on you. Everything happens to everybody! And you ain't gonna find nothing in your pocket to stave it off. Nothing can stave it off! Power doesn't do it. Because you never have enough. Money? I don't know. You know anyone who's got enough money?

[holds up his Bible]

Jim: Is God good? I don't know. All I know is... something may give you comfort. And maybe you deserve it. If it comforts you to believe in God, then you do it. That's your business.
