100 Funniest Movies (Part 5 ~ # 80-76)
81To Start at the Beginning...
- 100 Funniest Movies (Part 1 ~ # 100-96)
SPOILER ALERT! This is the link that will take to the start of the countdown.
# 80 ~ Heathers
The Best Part!!
Winona Ryder was in a few teen comedies in her day, from the debut in Lucas (1986) to her college movie Reality Bites we watched her grow up. We should have seen shoplifting on the horizon, cause she stole our hearts forever in this one. Christian Slater was also in some comedies of note, including his debut in The Legend of Billie Jean (That was supposed to be funny, right?), then he played a very funny character called Arkansas Dave Rudabaugh in Young Guns II and then his teen opus Pump Up the Volume back in 1990. None of these movies made the list however, so enough about them.
HEATHERS - 1989
Heathers is the blackest teen comedy of the 80s and that is why we love it. Let's see what we've got here, shall we? Veronica is a popular but intelligent teenager who meets the dangerous but alluring J.D. and the two are about to get into some serious stuff. Murder, Fake Suicide Notes, and yes, blowing up the school during a pep rally. But you know what....back then we didn't take it so seriously. We could take a joke about blowing up our school without worrying somebody was gonna do it. We still thought it was quite far off back then. This movie is what the business calls a cable-cult hit. They also call it PROPHETIC. This movie did not break records at the box office but once you saw it, you never forgot it, but that could also be because you proceeded to watch it over and over again. The first person who can tell me the name of the fake song and fake band from the movie (without looking it up) is really groovy.
# 79 ~ Much Ado About Nothing
Michael Keaton is fine comedic actor and a veteran of comedic films. The Proof, if needed, can be found in these two classics that sadly didn't make the list...
- Night Shift ~ 1982
- Johnny Dangerously ~ 1984
Much Ado About Nothing - 1993
Benedick and Beatrice are two of the funniest characters ever written by the great William Shakespeare. They are so expertly played by then-husband and wife team Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson that you completely forget that your watching a play from the year 1600. I watch this movie version like once a year, every year. Supporting cast includes: Denzel Washington, Keanu Reeves (who is awful) Robert Sean Leonard and the debut of Kate Beckinsale. Honestly, this movie cracks up!
# 78 ~ Bottle Rocket
Mandy Siegfried
DJ FUNKTUAL TRUE CELEBRITY STORIES FOUND HERE!
I randomly met Film Director Wes Anderson on 55th & 6th in Manhattan on my way to work one day back in 1996. It was the day after the MTV Movie Awards that year and he had recieved a best new filmmaker award the night before. I told him his speech about James Caan was really funny even though nobody laughed. He told me that I was the first person in public who had ever recognized him by face. I relish the moment to this day. I also told him what I thought about Bottle Rocket. He was amazed I had seen it in the theaters and liked it so much. I saw it in Manhattan @ The 72nd St. Theater with Actress Mandy Siegfried who you may have seen on Grey's Anatomy (as Meredith's half-sister) or more recently Eli Stone. I remember looking at her half-way through and saying, "Ya know what, I have no idea where this movie is going but I like it a lot." FYI: This is Owen Wilson's star-making performance and he co-wrote the screenplay as well so don't miss it.
update:

In a complete Coincidence, Mandy also appears in the Steve Martin / Goldie Hawn remake version of.....
# 77 ~ The Out-of-Towners
Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis are the Funniest Fictional Couple!
Jack Lemmon has made some really funny movies in his amazing career, starting with Some Like It Hot (1959), a year later he charmed us in The Apartment (1960), he made a few more until The Odd Couple (1968) and two years later he made this positively hilarious movie. The fact the remake was such a failure is a tribute to how genius the performances were by Sandy Dennis and Lemmon, 'cause hey, same script! Special attention must be paid to Sandy Dennis too who is quite possibly showing us the FUNNIEST FEMALE character in modern history. I know, I can't think of a better one!
The Out-Of-Towners - 1970
George and Gwendolyn Kellerman, a couple from Twin Oaks, Ohio, take an all expenses-paid trip to the "Big Apple" for George's big meeting for a top position in a major company. However, this was supposed to be more than a business trip. Great plans were made so that everything would go smoothly for the ever-nervous George. However, everything goes wrong from the start. Their flight is diverted to Boston which then lands them on a train and even when they do get to NY, folly finds them at every turn, with a mugging and a chipped tooth among them. The way George is determined NOT to be taken as an 'Out-of-Towner' is the thrust for comic delight. He takes down names and numbers throughout the movie threatening to sue or get fired everyone he meets in the city. The hotel lobby scene is especially funny.

# 76 ~ Finding Nemo
Brilliant!
When we watch a movie like this, with Ellen DeGeneres captured forever in her own comedic glory, we wonder what the hell happened in her other movies. Her "finding the right man" movie, Mr. Wrong from 1996 was especially uncomfortable. Edtv in '99 was also a disaster. But thankfully the folks at Disney have done her justic0e and they've done me a favor too, because it's the one movie my kid can watch over and over again without making me crazy. Well....that's my rediculous prediction anyway.
Finding Nemo - 2003
Set in the Great Barrior Reef off the coast of Sydney Australia, a nervous fish who is looking for his lost son is befriended by the ONLY fish who can help him (Because She Can Read), but there may be some communication problems. Dory is trying to help Marlin but she has some short-term memory loss as well. Together they will encounter sharks, jellyfish, and even some cool turtles before it's done but the comedy always comes from the two leads. These two characters could seemingly play funny bits for hours, and I'll bet they did too. One day in the near future, Disney will release the improv skits that ended up on the cutting room floor, mark my word. This is the ONLY animated kids/Disney movie on the list as well.

There are some great Funny Movies here...some that'd be higher up the list if I was tackling this topic...but, I'm Not! So, fascinated to see how this progresses! Like the avatar too!
lady luck, it won the Academy Award for BEST PICTURE despite this being the country that is being parodied. I call that sure fire proof.
Appartently quite a few people thought Annette Bening smacking herself for not selling a house was funny too.
American Beauty is a wrong movie. I hated the idea.
I haven't seen any of these movies except Finding Nemo. I love that movie. It is so cute. I saw The play in Florida at the Animal Kingdom, even that was excellent.
Tayler!
Tater, if you only saw Nemo and didn't like American Beauty then you prob'ly aren't a very good judge regarding movies.
Regarding American Beauty as an idea. What idea did you hate?
Self Examination? Self-Mockery?
No offense but you sound like Annette Bening's character who is afraid of what the neighbors think and cares more about a couch than spontaneous love-making. In other people who are ripe for parody.
DJ, if that is what you think of me, you have me all wrong. I am probably not that great of a movie judge. But I don't like the idea of American Beauty because it is about a 40 year old man that wants to have sex with a teenager. In fact a teenager that is his daughters age. That is wrong in my eyes.
Tayler!
Okay, fair enough. But what man, of any age wouldn't lust after some hot vixen like the one played by Mena Suvari?
She was a total bitch but she loved to pull guys strings and that's what you get. Lust.
When I first got out of HS, I had sex with someone 20 years my senior and it didn't hurt me at all. if anything it gave me much insight into what women really want (Orgasms) and de-mystified a lot of silly fears in my head about age at the time.
Haha. LOL.
A father shouldn't lust over a woman her age, even if she is a "hot vixen". It is true she pulled his strings and lured him into his fantasies about her, but being the authority figure and the adult, he should have known better and not acted on his fantasies. It's a twisted movie.
Tayler!
Okay, now we've got it.
Twistfully yours,
Jamie
Haha. okay. Fair enough.
Tayler!
I do agree that the scene between Kevin Spacey & Mena is too much but that is why it is shown, I think. We think wanna see it all but when we got what we wanted it was a turn-off. The filmmakers knowing this stopped the scene long before anything really bad happened.
They did much the same thing with Chris Cooper character trying to kiss Spacey's character later. It was technically a homo-sexual thing going on but it wasn't that at all. We find this moment heartbreaking because now we understand where all the pent up rage in the Nazi dad. He simply has feelings that he doesn't understand and just when he reaches out to (who he thinks is another homo-sexual) he is not only rejected but wrong about Lester. So he goes home and gets a gun because he knows he is incapable of processing this rejection on top of his own truth. Add army mentality and mix well.
IDEA: Would you mind at all if we took each line from this thread of ours in order and placed them ON THE HUB with American Beauty a/k/a Volume 1. I think you're points are not only valid but commonplace and I'd like to see how this would strenthen the thread. Let me know what you think. DJF
I think that when Chris Cooper tryed to kiss Kevin Spacey's character, it was right. What I mean is the director was trying to justify his actions (being so rough with his son) by giving him problems of his own. And making him gay was the only reason why he would not want his son to be gay also. He started out as a good father when he was trying to make sure that his son was clean for drugs so they had to twist that back and make him more liked (by the audience) at the end.
Okay. That sounds good DJF. Fine with me.
I snorted 7 packets of equal so I didn't miss any updates on this list...waiting for this countdown has become the highlight of my life. I am not if that is a fantastic reflection of your hub or a depressing account of my life but either way thank you.
ROFL! You earn that name everyday funnebone! You made my day too.
Thanks, a lot.
You are right up on the trends DJ. I saw a piece on CBS this morning talking about how hot number lists are ) I'll have to do a couple myself.
Great hub as usual.
The people on CBS must know about me then cause I'm a Trend-Setter!
Much Ado About Nothing is definitely in my top five favorite movies of all time. But then, I'm kind of a Shakespeare geek. Not to mention Emma Thompson worshipper.
If so...you better see 'The Tall Guy' Ruud.
just saw swimming w/ sharks a few months ago. great flick. not sure what tatertot was watching, but american beauty was a terrific flick. twisted, yet funny, like swimming w/ sharks. still need to see bottle rocket.
Thanks, Billy. Your commentsa are much appreciated!
