Find Out For Yourself

One day I was watching one of those reality shows and one of the couples does a 'dance of the day'. That sounded like something I should be doing, because as I get older, it isn't so easy to find a way to dance. I no longer have access to dance studios or friends that dance and I don't drink so going to a club to dance has lost it's appeal to me.

So I thought you know this is my life, and if dance is important to me (which it is) I need to incorporate it in my life, no matter what other people think and even if conditions aren't ideal.

So I started a project both on my blog and on Flickr to dance and also take my photo dancing. I can't do it daily, because I already have way too many daily things going but I'm going to do it regularly as much as I can.

The Joy of Dancing

Dancing on my porch.

I don't care what my neighbors think. Maybe they'll come dance too.

  • Morris Dancing

Morris dancing and other photos of the LA Pagan Pride event I went to yesterday.

  • Morris Dancers at Pagan Pride LA

I was disappointed that there were no belly dancers at this year's Pagan Pride LA event. Or maybe if there were they left before we arrived. But there were some Morris Dancers with wonderful costumes and bells of course. I took a wee bit of Morris Dance classes once and wish I'd gotten good enough to perform it.

  • Dancing and Juggling

My neighbor had his music cranked way up but I actually liked what he was playing so I danced to it out on my patio in the dark. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Then that made me think about juggling so I got out my juggling clubs and juggled in the dark too. HA.

Moonmaiden, I'm so sad that you're isolated from the dance community.  I assume it's distance that means you don't have access?

My husband has always had a hankering to move to the mountains, but we keep putting it off, because we know there are no dance studios up there.  I don't think I could survive without my dancing!

Dancing is good for the soul, so they say!

Thanks Marisa. It's not so much the distance as it is my 30 year old truck and lack of money to rent a studio.

Ah, that video made me wince several times even as I admired their grace and athleticism!

I love to dance but can only do so rarely these days. physical limitations just bite!

Good hub!

Also Marisa, while I don't mind being stared at when I'm fit, I totally don't like to be looked at when I'm not. That rules out most classes where I would stand out like a sore thumb.

Really?  I must say, that's one reason why I'm so glad I discovered belly dancing.  In every other dance form, I've had to endure a certain amount of bitchiness and competition - not to mention an oversupply of long-legged sylphs.  In most belly dance classes (at least the ones here in Sydney) there's a hotch-potch of shapes, sizes and ages, so my fifty-year-old lumps, bumps and wrinkles fit right in!

Hey, and thanks for the flamenco video!

You are welcome Marisa. You are so fortunate you found a supportive group. If I was just now getting into belly dancing at 50 my view of it might be totally different. But I started belly dancing in 1977 in S. California which is still very very size concious. And even if there were no other dancers in the universe, dancing in my 51 year old body isn't anywhere near as fun or wonderful as dancing in my 22 year old body was. I'm sure many athletes struggle with their aging bodies. But we still need to keep moving right? Even if we aren't getting hired for those dancing gigs anymore and students flock to younger sexier teachers.

"Dancing in my 51 year old body isn't anywhere near as fun...". Oh, I hear you! If I had my choice, I'd still be in my pointe shoes. Ballet was my first love because of the way it stretches the whole body (and no other dance feels quite so much like flying). But when I got to about 40, ballet didn't love me any more - which is why I turned to flamenco, and now belly dance. I do enjoy it, but like you say, it's frustrating to know what you USED to be able to do.

I agree about ballet. Nothing makes you feel like you've been so thoroughly worked out from head to toe. But it's also so very hard on joints. But even when we can't jump anymore we can still do some of those amazing stretches in our warm-ups.
