Will laptops ever be this cheap?

It has been a dream for a while now for a company to produce a very cheap laptop making it possible for almost anyone to have access to a computer.

Computers and the internet are dividing the world more and more into the haves and have nots. All of the benefits that the internet can bring could help poor people to better their lives, of course after they have food and shelter.

A company in Sweden is supposedly building laptops for $150. The specs for the laptop are suppose to be:

- 14-inch (35.5 cm) WXGA screen - Intel Celeron processor at 1.5GHz - 256MB RAM, - 40GB hard drive - CD/DVD Combo drive - 802.11g wireless networking

Their website: www.medison.se

Since no-ne has yet to receive a laptop there are concerns that the whole $150 Medison laptop is a huge fraud.

A more serious organization OLPC, One laptop per child has a goal of building an inexpensive laptop for children in impoverished countries. The laptop is currently being built for around $180 and it doesn't even come close to the fabled Medison laptop.

Website: laptop.org

A company in Atlanta, Lite Appliances is also trying to build a $150 laptop. Although they don't have too many details on their website yet.

A cheap laptop for everyone in the world, sounds like a great goal, but is it really achievable? Of course, many people just need a computer to surf the web and check their email, but the internet is becoming more demanding with videos and various web applications. Trying to supply everyone in the world sounds like a great idea, but when most people don't have enough to eat, proper sanitation a place to live a laptop to surf the web is probably one of their least concerns.
