70100th Detroit Gold Cup Day Two, 7-12-08
Rain interrupted the 100th running of the Detroit Gold Cup on the Detroit River off Belle Isle today. Gold Cup hydroplane racing dates back to the Detroit's glory days of Garr Wood and the genius of the auto industry pioneers. Today, the unlimited class boats are powered by 750 cubic inch engines made by Rolls Royce, Allison and Lycoming and reach speeds of 200 mph mph on the protected waters of the Detroit River. I took the pictures below today between and during rain showers which resulted in a disappointingly small number of spectators but didn't slow the boats once they got going.

After the first four heats Saturday, the four winners all averaged 148 mph or better, and the fastest competition lap in each heat was 152, the first time so many boats have run that fast.
