11 Tips for Living With Methadone Sweating. How to Deal with Excessive Sweating
80Do You Drip?
Methadone can be a life saver (literally!) but although it works very well for opiate addicts, it can cause some unpleasant side effects.
One of the most commonly experienced side effects is excessive sweating, particularly at night. Although an incorrect (too low or too high) daily dosage can trigger sweating, most people who deal with methadone sweats perspire as a direct consequence of an appropriate dosage. Methadone won’t make everyone sweat, but those that do experience excessive sweat even when appropriately dosed will likely experience the side effect for as long as the methadone is used.
And although getting a "little sweaty" doesn’t sound so bad, those of us who have lived through methadone sweat filled days and even wetter nights can attest to the real discomfort of the side effect.
Here are some tips for reducing sweat…and for living more comfortably with the perspiration we do have.
Sweat Be Gone
in no particular order...
- Wear loose fitting clothing, light in weight and of natural materials. Your methadone sweats may seem independent of room temperature, but staying cool can limit the frequency of sweating – after all, if you sweat in the cold you'll sweat worse in the heat!
- Lose excessive weight! Extra fat heats us up and carrying that weight around requires greater exertion.
- Get fit. A finely tuned cardiovascular system will deal more easily with stair climbing and other daily activities that can sometimes get us sweating. (Also – if you’re going to be sweaty anyway, you might as well look normal for a change and sweat at the gym with all the other sweaty bodies!)
- Avoid spicy food. Chili pepper fools the body into a sweat response. You don’t need any help with that one…
- Wear antiperspirant. (OK – this is probably a no brainer – but there is a difference between antiperspirant and deodorant. Look from a brand that has a high percentage of aluminum chloride as an active ingredient)
- Upgrade to prescription strength antiperspirant. Your doctor can prescribe a roll-on stick that is stronger and more effective than over the counter brands. (Drysol is on common name brand).
- If you really can't stand the sweat, you can talk with your doctor about Botox injections at the sweat glands. These injections can greatly limit perspiration. There are other surgical procedures that target the sweat glands, but these are quite serious and risky operations.
- Take cool showers. OK, another no brainer, but sweat smells, and cool showers can help you to live more comfortably.
- Talcum powder. People from tropical climates swear by talcum powder as a way to stay dry-feeling in the heat.
- Try to stay calm. Stress can trigger sweat.
- Drink plenty of water. Dehydration will only worsen methadone induced constipation.

Unfortunately as of 12/2008, Akineton (Brand Name of Biperiden), which was most recently available thru Abbott Labs, has been discontinued in the US. I was all fired up to give it a trial, saw our clinic MD for an Rx and was shot down at the pharmacy. If anyone knows of any alternative availability, please post info!!
Awesome tips on how to stop sweating here.. thanks alot for the helpful info, it is really great!!!
Oh boy that sucks I was going to ask my doctor about that drug this week. bummer....
I sweat so bad off methadone my face and hair are soaked from just getting out of the car to go in the car . M ethadone has helped me so much but I need this sweating problem to stop . vitadone didnt really work for me. HELP
Same here! I have to admit though, it does seem worse in the summer months with me, and strangely in the last month, since coming off antidepressants(mirtazapine), I'm not sweating nearly as much??? Has anyone heard of antidepressants making you sweaty?? Methadone has been SUCH a help, but theres been many occasions when I'm doing shopping or something like that, and the sweat is literally RUNNING down my face, neck, chest and back. Its soo embaressing, I get all paranoid thinking people are staring, which makes the sweating worse as I'm anxious! Nightmare! I was thinking of Botox, but it's only any good for localised areas, like palms, not when its all over the body! I went to my doctor about my sweating (im in the uk), and she said there's no treatment other than botox and strong anti-perspirents, I find it amazing that there are cures for some types of cancer, and other serious, life threatening problems, but nothing for excessive sweating!
has anyone eles tried vitadone for sweating? i litterally sweat All day even when im not moving. its gross and embarressing but its not like i can just stop taking methadone! has anyone heard that teststerone injections would help? and would that be o.k for women?
Generally, I don't sweat excessively but the exception is my palms which are almost permenantly clammy. Anyone had this or am I just a naturally clammy handed person??!!! While I was an addict I had dry hands! Not that I'm going back to heroin to solve the problem!!
Lots of the tips that you shared here are also valid for people who have a general sweating problem, not just for people who have methadone sweating. Congrats, hope more people see this!
I've had a sivere problem with "Methadone Sweating" for close to 10 years now. I seem to sweat with alot of different pain medications and not just Methadone.
I sometimes wonder which is worse, the chronic pain that I suffer with, or sweating caused by the medications.
I sweat just filling or emptying the dishwasher, and I'm not joking!
I appreciate the information given here but these things don't help me with this problem. Does anyone else have any ideas that I could try? I'd truly appreciate any information!
Thanks!!

There is a RX drug called Biperiden that is an AntiCholinergic (anti-sweating). It has shown in clinical trials to greatly reduce the sweating side effect from Methadone. Ask your doctor about it.
